DIOCESAN SYNOD.

Thubsdat, October 80. The Synod resumed shortly after four o'clock in the afternoon, his Lordship the Bishop presiding. The Dean presented a report from the Select Committee appointed to consider the expediency of severing the parish of Lyttelton, and forming Dan-pier's Bay into a parochial district. He gave notice to move the recommendation for adoption. . The Bey. Canon Cholmondeley obtained leave to bring in, a BiU to Amend the Cemetery Begulations. The BiU was read a first time, and the Becond reading made an order of the day for Friday. The Bey. E. E. Otwat moved—"That the Synod request the Church Property Trustees to raise from year to year a sum of money to enable them to place in the hands of the Standing Committee yearly the sum of -3500 sterling, to meet the most pressing wants of the diocese, such sum not to be a charge on the revenue cf the Church Property Trust.". The Bey. H. C. M. Watson seconded the motion pro forma. The P--S_ox_T, in answer to Mr Malet, ruled that the motion was not in order under statute 609, but in order that it might be di_C—_ed, His Lordship at the Bey. Mr Otwayfs -request, allowed it-to stand in his name. The debate was i___rrupted by the tix o_to_t -djo-nunent, Mr Bose being in possession. Tbe Synod resumed at 7_o p.m. The Bey. J- W. Stac- moved— *'That the thanks cf the Synod be given to the Bey. J. 0.8. Hoare for the sermon preached by him before the members of the "Synod on the evening of the 21st October, and

Hon. H. B. Gresson. » The motion was supported by Archdeacon Harris and Bey. H. Collins. Mr Mukbay-Atnslbt approved of a . suggestion by the Dean to suspend the , grants for a year. , His Lobdskip in reply, expressed his , opinion that there was no money to pay these grante, if the motion was lost, and the trustees bad not said how they were going to meet the difficulty. Mr Habg-bavbs, by permission, made a statement to the effect that in aU probabi- , lity these grants—if not thejwhole of them, the greater part of them—would be provided for. Some extraord__ary efforts would be made by the trustees. His Lordship, under the circumstances, withdrew his motion. The Bey. H. Vbbb Whitb moved— "That the boundaries of the parish of Kaiapoi be extended, so as to include within the parish rural sections 1033, 404, 2117,275, and that part of 374 which lies to the east of a straight line drawn from the south-west corner of 404 to the northwest corner of 1083." Tbe motion was seconded by Mr Erabbll, and carried. Mr Bosh resumed the debate on the Bey. Mr Otway. motion to raise £500 from year to year, and suggested that as it had been discussed it should now be withdrawn. The Bey. E. B. Otway having permission granted him, withdrew his motion. Archdeacon Habkis moved—"That on the condition of £123 103 being paid to the Bey. _. C. Brady, the Church Property Trustees be recommended to make a grant of £250 and a loan of £630 on the usual terms and with proper security to the church officers of the Otaio and Bluecliffa parochial district, to enable them to purchase the site of the house now occupied by the Bey. L. C. Brady, i»nd to payoff the loan of £700 to the estate of the late Mr B. H. Bhodes; the house and ten acres of land to be conveyed to the Church Property Trustees." The Very Bey. the Dbak seconded the motion. After a long discussion, ' The Bey. Mr Stack moved the adjourn- ' ment of the debate. The motion was not seconded. '■ Archdeacon Harris' motion was carried ■ with some verbal alterations. i The Bey. A. W. Hands moved—" That 1 it be an instruction to the Standing Com- | mittee, with reference to. grants made ; ' towards the building of churches, parsonages and schools, to instruct the Church - Property Trustees to pay 75 per cent, of j the grant upon work done on receipt of the i architect's certificate, countersigned by the ] Archdeacon or Chairman of the Building 1 Committee." i Archdeacon Habbis seconded the motion, ' and suggested tha word "recommend," instead of "instruct," the Church Pro- , perty Trustees, and the elimination of the , words "Archdeacon or." . , The motion was ultimately withdrawn. 1 Mr Dbvbnibh Mbabbs moved—"That 1 the Church Property Trustees be requested 1 to lay on the table a statement showing ' the I—_bUities on each of the several trusts ' and properties under their control, and ■ also the amounts of Sinking Funds or other \ assets that have accumulated as against •, the said liabiUties." i Mr Maudb seconded the motion*, to < which an addition was moved by Mr 1 Mtjbbay-Atnblht as follows:—"And to < have a statement made out of aU landed ] property under their charge, distinguishing j whether leased or otherwise occupied, with j terms of such lease or letting, and if sold j on deferred payments terms to be stated; t also, of aU funds under their control, and _ if invested, or mortgaged or otherwise, with - fuU particulate and statement of aU funds 1 daebythem." 1 Mr Mclktybb seconded the amendment, * and suggested that the return should be made for next year. J Mr Murray-Ayhsley _ amendment was \ lost. . The motion was carried on the voices. 1 Archdeacon Habbis moved the third i reading of the BiU to amend Diocesan 1 Statute No. 5, clause 19. The motion was carried, and the BiU passed. ] The Bey. Canon Cholhondblxy moved —" That the Standing Committee be re- ] quested to carry out the regulations of Synod for the repairs of parsonages, and 1 to lay before the Synod next year a report of the state of each parsonage in the • diocese." , ArohdeacOn Habbis seconded the motion, which was carried without discussion. i

Attention was called to the fact that there was no quorum in the House, and the Synod adjourned at 11.10 p.m. until 4 p.m_ on Friday (to-day).
