The question of the federation of the colonies was referred to in the Council yesterday, and the general expression of opinion was unfavorable to such a course. In the Supreme Court a decision has been given in the action for damages against the Government, that the Treasury have not a monopoly of public roads or any rights over and above those which belong to other etreet vehicles. In the particular case, .£9OO damages were awarded for injuries caused by a collision. Splendid reports have been received from the Silverton silver mines. It is distant about 800 miles from Sydney, and near the South Australian border. Many of the assays have yielded at the rate of.from fifteen to nineteen thousand ounces of silver to a ton of ore. Only a few days ago a solid block of ore, weighing 2581b5, and estimated to contain three pounds worth of silver, was obtained only eighteen inches below the surface of one of the claims. The country has been pegged out for miles in all directions.
The Melbourne " Age New Guinea exploration party ba3 returned, one missing. They entered the mouth of the Mocassai River, and proceeded northwards and westward for 120 miles, and discovered nine large rivers, draining 10,000 square miles of fine pastoral country. At the month of the Hacassai Biver they found the river blocked-with a number of large canoes containing from a thousand to twelve hundred red natives, who drove them back. The party had te abandon their vessel and take to the mangroves, and ,were attacked by a party of natives. One of the party was wounded, but managed to baffle pursuit, and camped in the mangroves for|three nights, suffering from want of food. He marched waist deep in the sea during the day, and spent the night in trees on the edge of the beach, and finally reached the point of the mission station and reached Thursday Island. The country as a rule is Wealthy. There is good soil, with valuable timber, and plains that would make splendid cattle country
