ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held yesterday at four o'clock in the Commercial Hotel. Present—Messrs B. Beetham (Chairman), J. S. Cooke, F. J. Kimbell and Drs. Frankish and Brittin.
Correspondence was read from the Acclimatisation Society, Melbourne, advising shipment of deer and monkeys. The Secretary stated that a pair of deer had arrived safely, but the monkeys referred to had not come.
From sundry Boad Boards, in answer to the Society's applications, replying that they had no Bangers. The Upper Ashburton Boad Beard would allow its Clerk to Act as a Banger for the Society, and the Ashburton County Council wee willing that its Water Bangers should act in the same way. Dr. Brittin enquired about the number of licenses taken out this year for shooting.
The Secretary gave it as 152 against 238 last year. Dr. Frankish thought this was to be expected from the amount of poaching that was done, which made game scarce.
The Secretary reported some facts, which showed that hares at least were plentiful. He was glad to be able to say, also, that a covey of prairie chickens had been seen. These birds were liberated six years ago. It was resolved to send the deer to Mr Buchanan at Little Biver, that gentleman having offered to fence in a very large area of country for the animals. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Buchanan for his handsome offer.
Accounts to the amount of .£2l 6s 8d were paesed for payment, and the meeting ended.
