GRAIN AND PRODUCE.
The month has been singularly inactive, considering we are a good -way into the grain season, and the business done "I°®? grain is comparatively insignificant. This may be attributed to the unusual lateness of the harvest, and to the fact that farmers are etill busily engaged in securing their crops. The few sales of -wheat that have been made were principally to meet local millers' requirements. Advices from Europe of the unparalleled stocks held there have had the most depressing effect upon this market, and graia buyers here seem unwilling to ope»te even at the present low range of prices, fearing a further drop in value 3. The result of this is that a good many farmers will not sell at current rates, preferring to take their chance m the Home market. Hopes were entertained last month that there would be an active demand during the season for oats for the Australian markets, but from latest advices there does not seem much prospect of theirbeing realised. Values are accordingly much weaker. Maltsters are now in the market for prime malting barley, and several parcels have changed hands at fair prices. The weather throughout the month has been very favorable for harvesting operations/ami has been fully taken advantage of, but unfortunately through over anxiety 'to have their graiii secured a number of farmers have threshed their wbeat .before lit was in fit condition, the result m that several lots have been rejected during the P ""wheTt^ y Quotatioii3 are as follows =- Tuscan, 3s 3d, pearl and velvet chaff 3sl id, £nd Hunter's white 3s, chick feed Is 6dto Ik These valuea are for delivery at country stations within a reasonable range of at mUling, and Is 8d to Is 10d for bright Bh ßarS- Prime «*£»»«£* with a ready sale at from 3s 9d to 4e, f.o.b.
