President, Mr George Gould; Vice-Presi-dents,Messrs W. H. Wynn-Williams, . . M-HJL, John Anderson and James Skaad; Commodore, Mr Henry Thomson, M.H.R.; Yice-'Jommodore, Mr J. Stanley Monck; Hon. Secretary, Mr Shepley C. Kesteven j Hon. Treasurer, Mr Thomas L. Smith; Judges, the Revs, E. A. Lingard and J. O'Brien Hoare; Starter and Umpire, Mr M. J. Kllgour; Committee, Messrs F. D. ■ Kesteven, J. O. Jones, A. Johnston, ... W. A. Styche, F. Fußcr, W. Sconlar, , M. J. Kilgour. E. M. Boulton, C. ABard, J. G. Rale, H. L. Welch, J. Freeman, G. F. Wright, J. J. Collins, ■ad J. Thomson. The first annual regatta under the aaspices of the newly-constituted Christc__uioa Regatta Club was held on Saturday afternoon on the Sumner Estuary. So _r as the races were concerned, the xegatta was a thorough success; bat the attendance was not so numerous as the occasion deserved. This, perhaps, was owing to the threatening aspect of the weather and the counter attraction of the return cricket match at Lancaster Park.. During the early part of the afternoon the ooolne-s of the strong breeze was greatly diminished by a warm sun, but as the day wore on the wind became damp and cold, •ad at the conclusion of the races was so-ompa-ded by rain, which made the drive hack to town the reverse of pleasant. The "breeze blowing up the estuary made the coarse somewhat lumpy, especially at juncture of the Heathcote and Avon aivera. Here the crews of the outriggers sxperienoed hard work in the management -e_ tt-eir frail craft, and all got pretty well -drenched. The Committee who had the carrying out of the programme deserve T1 for their punctuality in starting the events, and to the Club generally must be accorded a word of praise for *he interest as weU as energy they have .shown ia order to render their first gathering a success. In addition to private prises the Club allotted nearly JE9O out of the asm collected, bo that they wBl have a ffm-ll credit balance with which to comaaanee the new year. The Boating Clubs -which took part in the regatta were the Wellington, Canterbury, Union, Cure, and ■j-_B_L_a?the first mentioned only competing in the Champion Eoar-oared Rase. WeUingtcn soon taking the lead, Canterbury following close, and Union third. i This position was maintained for about the first half-mile, when Canterbury came up . and passed the leader, who feU away, and Union isaumed second place. = Before the fast turn was reached, Wellington, pulling a straight course, was again to the front, but the absence of a cox was apparently felt at the corner. Canterbury 'came round , splendidly, and in doing so took the lead, Union coming in for second place, and , Wellington again in the rear. The-only alteration, until three-quarters from home, Tras in tho distance between the crews. Stock called on hia men, who answered pluckily, and drew up to the Union. By this tune the lumpy water had been passed, and the Union pulling a long steady stroke worked up to Canterbury.' Lean being unable to keep the lead the Union went first, and Fuller, judging the race prettily, kept a nice lead, and won by several lengths. Canterbury still kept ahead of the Comet, and obtained second place, Wellington third. The three crews pulled excellently from first to last, and had the Wellington been on an absolutely straight course, or had they used a cox, their position when the gun was fired might have been much better. The Union crew gradually feU behind and never saw the race; but this may be accounted for by the fact that the team was a scratch one. Canterbury held the lead the whole distance and won by a length or two. The Cure were second nearing home, but Wells increased his stroke and got into second position at the finish. Time, 7mm 33sec. Union fell into second position, and Canterbury last. At the mile flag the Sabrina had a few lengths lead, but Lowry, by a game effort, overhauled her stroke after stroke, and when the final turn was reached the two crews were pulling bow and bow, Canterbury being a long way behind. Boot's call was responded to about half a mile from home, and by degrees he drew '. away from "his opponents. His crew, who had been splashing badly for sonic disi tance, and a little out of time, dipped i prettily and accurately, with the result i that aU the Union's efforts were unavailing. ' The Reds won by three or four lengths,. • Union second, and Canterbury, who had ! failed to alter its position for the greater , part of the distance, third. However, there was very. 1 little, if any, advantage gained by 1 either. The Cure out out the run--1 ning, but ere the mile was reached \ Canterbury and Union had supplanted the Kaiapoi, the former having the best of it. Coming round the turn the Union got on even terms, and for some seconds the crews were neck and neck. A little bad steering on the part of the Union cox. gave Canterbury the advantage, and going a direct course the Kea's lead was increased. The \ Union, urged on by stroke, diminished the distance by about a length, and the Kaiapoi crew, who were pulling in pretty style, were about a length in the rear. P. Grierson spurted just at the finish and won by about | two lengths, Union second, Kaiapoi third. Time, lOmin. 14(.ec Champion Pair-oared Outrigger: \\ miles. Prize, Mr W. H. The three boats got away on good terms, but the Cure as usual made it hot for some distance. Union had second place and Canterbury third. At the mile the Canterbury crew, who had been wearing down, overtook the Union, and collaring the leader worked hard until they were in the van. The Union re-doubled their efforts as smoother water was reached, and by the time another half mile had been covered had passed the Kaiapoi who were lagging a little, and got even with Canterbury. The ebb tide gave an additional impetus to the boats, and each made good pace. Ollivier lay to his work with a will, and so'did FoUer, but the former could not make up the lost ground, and lost the race by a very little. Cure third. Coming round the turn the Union still led, and shortly after the Trades, who had got on close quarters, accidentally fouled with the Union in the tetter's water: The Trades' cox became so confused that he ran the boat on a Band bank (from which the crew had to carry it), and the Union pulled home alone. Nearing the first and ( sharpest turn Canterbury was seen to be leading, Cure next, and the Union pulling a tail race. But the latter having the short side were steered at the corner splen- : didly, and in a short time were in the '. front. As the boats approached the huts ' the water became a little rougher, and told • |on the Union. Kaiapoi came up quickly, and Canterbury were dimiruahing the distance they had fallen behind. Smoother water reached the Union again improved, but Kaiapoi followed suit, and it appeared r doubtful whether Kesteven's crew would \ keep up the grand stroke they were pull-| \ ing. Canterbury were stiß in the rear \ with «o prospect of lessening their dis- ] tance. Winterbourna's crew were work- ] ing weU and prettily, and at every stroke gained on the leaden until about h-if a mile from home, when they were on even terms. The race was now simply between * these two, and it was jost a toss up to < which the prize would falL. The two i

crews had settled down to an effective stroke, and were dipping together, neither boat leading. The race became very exciting, each crew being cheered and urged, and each crew looked to be doing its utmost. Bight down to within a few lengths of lie goal, the two boats were, never more than afoot or so alternately in front of each other, and the race looked like finisbinginadeadheat. When close home the Union put. on a final sport and shot ahead. . Kaiapoi answered immediately, but the Union struggled hard, kept the advantage, and won by less than half a boat's length the closest contested race of the day; Canterbury was third. Kaiapoi and the Union fought for second places. The latter caught Kaiapoi during the last half-mile, and stuck to her place. Canterbury won asily, Union second, and Cure third.
