ROAD BOARDS.
SOUTH RAKAIA.
An adjourned meeting of this Board we* held recently. Present—Messrs- CH. Mackie (chairman), B. Q. Holme«,.and B. S. Coster. Leave of absence was grantee to Messrs J. Mann and £.. W. Oeborne. The tenders of Michael Nolan for the formation of the town belt and Dunford street and Bolleeton etreet were accepted. A petition for the construction of another road through the Tillage settlement was not entertained. Mr Turner wa* requested to furnish particulars of the nature of the fence he wished to have erected between the Loan and. Mercantile premises and the Board's site bj next Board day. It was decided that unless Harrison Bros, repair the croseinge co»----plained of by the Board within a week the County Council will be requested to cut off the water supply.. The namee of Mr C. W. Turner and A.+ Chamberlain were ordered to be placed on. the vataatioivrolE Mr W. L. It was resolved to obtain permission to Bell the immigrant cottagee, to be removed off the land, and to plant the site trees. Bicycle Race, three mile handicap, cup; ; far members of a New Zealand Bicycle ; - Club only. Erstprixe-»3f. Three comweted in this event. W. Pamterand F. R. Itornsford started from scratch, H. Jenkins i had an advance of 150 yards. For the first ' Ive rounds there was no*alteration in the positions, Jenkins led by his handicap. . Painter was second, and Dunsford third. . On the sixth round Dunsford h~.d assumed ( aeoond place, and gradually drew away from' Painter until he was some twenty- ! _rre yards ahead. Geo. Robertson, 40ft '. «n,lst; J. R. McGregor, 40ft lin, 2nd. For i Hba first time that Robertson has " put the < •time," this may be considered a very creditable performance. Dinnie, who only •xhibited, "put the stone" 48ft 4in. Handicap, 440 yards. First prize -33, . second £1. Seven started. AB got away to - aa even start, and for the first 100 yards it appe__ed as though the scratch men were going to reach the leaders. On the home torn, however, M. McCormick (17yds) spurted and caught J. G. Wade (17yds), toe leader, who was closely followed by G. Goodwin (10yds.) These three ran home together, the first mentioned winning by •bout a yard. A similar distance separated the second and third nun. Time, ■_*l-__hsec. Walking Handicap, one mile. First prize -6, second J-l. Eight started. At the last lap Bp_ight, who had a handicap of ten yards, took the lead, and maintained it to the finish. J. McCourt was awarded second wise, the second one in being disqualified for unfair walking. Several of the compe-t-tox- were disqualified. W. G. Carle was loudly applauded as he passed the stand in foo-ta place for his straightforward and «-xceptionaßyneat walking. The race took v fmin._7sec. Tossing the Caber. First prize £3, second -31. W. Matheson, Ist; George Robertson, 2nd. Donald Dinnie exhibited in this event. He was the only one who tamed the caber. Matheson made the mead: best attempt, and Robertson came -HKt. Throwing 561b weight. Fust prize J-3, wcomd 4-1. W. Matheson and Geo. Robertsocwere the only competitors. The latter threw the weight over a bar 10ft high, and wbtained first prise. Matheson in his attempt touched the bar. Dinnie exhibited. He threw the weight a height of Uffc with one hand. Throwing 161b Hammer, handicap. J. "Wright threw the hammer 85ft lOiin, he 3-ad a handicap of 38ft, making his dis--fi_nee l_3ft~-oiin; he obtained first prize. W. Matheson was second with 116 ft 9_in, a handicap of 20ft. Donald. JM-O-ie was third. lie was -cratch man, ■ad throw the lno-aw**- 1 115 ft -$ixu Handicap Race,«ne mile, first prise _K3, second £1. This event was won by K. McCormick (10yds), A. Fosse (25yds) <t>woffd T McCormick was last for a long distance, but towards the finish he adxaaced, quickly, and won as he liked. Time, S_u_u~ Sword Dance. Special prize of -31 Is by _Cr Lowe. J. Banks first. J. R. McQregor wag the only other competitor. Wrestling Match (Scotch style). First gEHK -Sls, second £5. Aa the Scotch style waß unknown to many on the ground, even .Scotchmen themselvee, and as it was anti«(p_ted that Dinnie would compete, this «rent was anxiously awaited. The rules ware read to the competitors. From the coles it appeared that thirty seconds were allowed to take hold, after which time the -aea, if not holding round the back, could _w_d elsewhere. When one was down he -ukdto be kept down by his opponent for t-drty seconds, otherwise no fall would be seared. Hudson and Robertson were the ftest two to enter the lists. The latter, -however, proved too much for his small apponeht, who, when down, could by bo endeavor rid himself of Robert'ion's weight. Matheson and Dinnie then came together. Dinnie waa little time in bringing Matheson to the turf, but it was a karder task to keep him there. They -soiled about for some time, and at last Matheson made an attempt to force Diunie's hands and press him down. Dinnie quickly placed one arm round his opponent's neck •Bd pulled his head down; with the other he rolled him on his side,-and kept him there until time was called. In the second feant Dianie just lifted Matheson off his fart and laid him on the broad of his back. Mathesoa declared himself satisfied before time was called. The tog of war began when Dinnie and Robertson caught hold. Both being men of strong muscle and evidently determined to do their utmost, a grand struggle was expected. In this the spectators were not altogether disappointed Bobert-on, by a back heel movement, got Dinnie down and worked his hardest to keep him. down, but all to no purpose. For mama minutes the two were alternately top and bottom, and eventually Robertson got the uppermost of Dinnie and pinned his arms. Robertson held his opponent down until time was called. The ■Bal rounds were not tried, Robertson, wader medical advice, declining to go on with the match. He was much exhausted, •nd had strained an old injury. Donald gst first prise and Robertson second. . Hand Bar Penormance. Dinnie next ■erfb-med with ia hand bar. It weighed BUb, was 9ft lin long, and2i'in in diameter. This he raised above his head four times with one hand; held it from him as he lay down oa bis back and rose again, and balaaeed it above his head with one hand.
