DRAINAGE BOARD.
The Drainage Board met yesterday. Present Messrs L. Harper (chairman), F. Jenkins, R. Clephane, J. H. Hosking, W. Vincent, J. E. Parker, A. Ashworth, and F. W. Hubbard. An apology was received from Mr WLite, who was unable to attend through illness. The Engineer's report was read, and considered clause by clause. It referred chiefly to the subjects of conespondence, and was adopted as a whole. Correspondence was read from the Colonial Secretary, Wellington, asking if the Board meant to bring the drains up to the Hospital, or if the Government was expected to carry drains from it to the end of Cashel Btreet. If the former, Mr Dick would be glad to learn when it would be done. A memo, from the Board's Secretary stated that a reply had been sent on February 18th, to the effect that the Board was unable to lay more sewers, but was quite willing to supply some pipes which it has in stock for the requisite connections. The Board's letter of October 26th, ISB3, covering estimate of cost, was confirmed. Mr Vincent considered it perfectly reasonable to request the Government to lay the drain. % , , _, Mr Hubbard thought the Board should lay the drain, or at any rate guarantee the Government repayment of the cost at some future date. All the inhabitants on Oxford terrace would benefit by the drain if laid. Mr Vincent said the Hospital paid no rates, and the Board would continually be paying the cost of pumping its sewage. The Hospital Board would never contribute to the cost, and the Board had no power to make them, The reply of the Secretary was approved. ... From Mr J. B.
