ASHBURTON.
I The usual meeting of the above waa held on Monday evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Bird, St. Hill, A. Orr, J. Orr, T. Sealey, W. Leggett, and & B.Nelson. The debit balance at the Bank was reported to be £1010 8s 2d. Amongst the correspondence read was ia, letter from Mr J. Walker, stating that in consequence of the Council's improvementsin Wills and Cameron streets, he had sustained great damage by the late flood, and was com-i polled to leave his house owing to the water coming in to a depth of nine inches. He therefore claimed from the Council damages to the extent of £34. After discussion, it was resolred that the claim be not entertained. Letters were read from j the Mount Somers Road Board and Mr Friedlander re the Mount Somers railway. A discussion arose, and, on the motion of Cr : St. Him,, it was resolved that Mr Friedlander's letter be not received. The letter from the Boad Board was received, and it was decided that the Council be formed into a Committee to consider the whole question. Communications were received from Mr J. Ivess, M.H.R., re the railway reserve, and after discussion a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Wrightand Mc Ivess for the trouble they had taken in the matter of the reserves. Crs. St. Hill, Scaly, and Leggett were appointed on the Committee in which vacancies had occurred by the retirement of Crs. Ivess, St. Hiß, and Roberts. On the motion of Cr. St. Hun, seconded by Cr. Nklsoh, it was decided that the footpath in front of Messrs Friedlander's premises be taken up and made to the proper level. Attention was called to the water lying opposite the postoffice and near the railway station, and it was_ decided to communicate with the Eesident Engineer on the subject. The Council then adjourned.
