BOARD OF EDUCATION.

An ordinary meeting of thiß Board was held yesterday afternoon. There were present—Messrs J. Inglis (Chairman), S. C. Farr, and A. H. Cunningham. The Chairman's report of the appointments made and business done by him since last meeting, was read and approved. An application that the CathoUc School at Ashburton might be inspected by the Board's Inspector, w_b granted.

A request that the school erected by the Harbor Board at the PUot Station might be brought under the control of the Board, was agreed to.

In regard to a letter from Mr Bishop, of Southbridge, referring to the recognition of School of Art certificates, it was decided to address the Government on the question.

It was decided that the Barr HiU School should be reduced bo on aided school unless the number of scholars was increased.

Further leave of absence was granted to Mr WatMns, of the Normal School.

It was agreed that the refund of the CoUege fees formerly sanctioned by the Board, should not be granted in the case of three students who had only attended seven, eight, and nine lectures respectively out of a course of thirteen.

Mr Buckley was appointed to the Kowai Bush School, on condition that he came up for examination for a certificate.

A petition was received asking that Mr Dickenson should be retained at the Seafield School, and also a letter from the Commissioner stating that he considered Mr Dickenson should be dismissed. Mr Dickenson also wrote making complaints against the Commissioner, and it was agreed that the letter should be forwarded to the Commissioner to report upon the statements contained therein.

The foUowing tenders were accepted:— Lyttelton retaining waU, Messrs Dickson and Collier, .£214 10s; West Christchurch buildings, Messrj Moore and Mcßae, .£1950 18s lOd (subject to certain alterations) ; leveUing and draining at St. Albans, Mr Prudhoe, £40.

The Gymnastic Drill Instructor asked permission to order certain repairs. It was agreed that he should report in each ease to the respective Committees where repairs were required.

It was agreed that the Sydenham School Committee should be permitted to hire the Oddfellows' Hall temporarily on account of the overcrowded condition of the present school. The Inspectob reported with regard to the New Brighton school that on the occasion of a dance lately held in the building the beU was cracked and other damage done. He recommended the addition of a small infant school to the present building. It was agreed that the attention of the Committee should be called to the report. The suggested additions were deferred for further consideration. The Fendaltown Committee wrote asking that a picket fence should be erected on the school ground boundary. Certain improvements in the fence were agreed to. A circular was read from tbe Department j in reference to the protection of property in the Native schools, and suggesting that' teachers should have the interests of their schools sufficiently at heart to use some personal efforts to protect the school property. The Chaibman said this circular only referred to Native schools, but they might draw up a somewhat similar circular for the Board's teachers. The suggestion was agreed to. Messrs Craig and MuCaul's tender for the supply of gymnastic apparatus was accepted.

After disposing of a quantity of routine business the Board adjourned.
