Government have announced in Parliament that it is not intended to send any more war vessels to Madagascar, it being considered that H.M.S. Dryad, now there, will suffice to watch British interests. Sir William Vernon Hareourt, Home Secretary, announced in the House of Commons to-day that orders hare been given for an increase of the Metropolitan police force by 500 men, in order to provide for the increased protection of public buildings. In the appeal case Boyd v Chamberlain, the demurrer to the plaintiff's pleas has been allowed by the Court of Appeal. Arrived—Norman McLeod, from Napier, December 3rd. Beceived March 20th, 10 p.m. A fair demand prevailed at to-day's -wool sale. The catalogue comprised 12,300 bales. Consols remain at New Zealand securities continue at the following quotations .—Five Per Cent. 10-40 Loan, 107$; Five Per Cent. 1889 Loan, 104; Pour Per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, 102 j Four Per Cent, inscribed stock, 101 i. Breadstuffa. — The market continues weak, but prices are without change; Adelaide wheat, 50s; New Zealand wheat 46b per quarter; Adelaide flour, 34s 6d, all ex store. Australian beef tallow reiiain3 at 40s 6d, and mutton at 43s 6d per cwt. The homeward mails, via Naples, per the Orient steamship Sorata, which left Melbourne on Febraruy 7th. were delivered in London to-day. In the arrival announced yesterday fo* Cooleen read Glenlora. Eeceived March 21at, 12.50 a.m. t. • ~ - „ LONDON, March 20. It is officially announced that Lord Carlingford has,been appointed to succeed Earl Spencer as Lord President of the
Council. It is understood that the Earl of Eosebery, Political Secretary to the Home Office, will be appointed Lord Privy Seal vice Lord Carlingford. ■ In the House of Commons to-day the j Bill for amendment of the Bankruptcy Laws was read a second time, and will now • be passed on to the Grand Committee for j consideration and report. In a despatch which Earl Doflerin has addressed to the Foreign Secretary, detailing the plan of the new Egyptian Constitution, his Lordship strongly condemns the withdrawal of the British troops until the new form of government is working thoroughly.
