wheat, noun, Ac. j ■ The prospects for the next crop, both j here and on the Continent, are anything but good, owing to the continuance of wet weather, which has proved so unfavorable to farmers, and a large amount of speculative business has been done for forward arrivals, principally in Calif ornian shipments, which have advanced Is per quarter. In colonial cargoes no business has been done in Australian, but prices obtainable for early despatch would be 47s 6d for iron and 47s for wooden vessels, c S.&i., to United Kingdom, and for London direct 468 6d to 46s 9d. New Zealand wheat for April—May shipment is still held for 455, cf.&i. to United Kingdom. On the spot Australian, being in very limited supply, has' advanced 2s per quarter, the finest qualities being 50s to 52s per 4961b5. New Zealand are worth 6d to Is per quarter more money, the value to-day being 47s to 48s for long berried, and average 43s 6d to 45s per 4961b5. The quantity of wheat on passage from all ports is now 2,275,500 quarters, against 2,853,500 quarters this time last year, but stocks in granary are larger. Although supplies of American flour are heavy, holders are firm, Australian being 6d dearer at 33s to 34s for superfine and 27s to29s for. fine. New Zealand are Is better, the quotation being 29s to 32s per 2801b. New Zealand malting barleys are firm, but the srice5 rice is unaltered, viz., 34s to 40s per 4481b. 'he nominal value of New Zealand oats is 30s to 35s per 3841b. for fine and 23s to 27s per 3361b. for ordinary feed, but there are no supplies in the market. tallow and hides. There has been a good demand for Australian tallow since our last advices, especially for mutton of fair to good quality, owing to the scarcity of good Home tallow, and we now quote good to fine 44s to 46s and fair to fine beef 40s to 43s 6d per cwt. Inferior qualities are not so much wanted, but about previous prices are maintained. The stock in importers' hands is about 6200 casks. Australian hides were dull of sale to-day forboth heavy and light, and for the portion sold prices were id to id per lb. lower.
