THE ROYAL COMMISSION.

[PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] NELSON, December 5

The Royal Commissioners arrived this afternoon and at once commenced taking evidence. Robert Disher, jun., late manager for Edwards and Kerr, of Tarndale ; Adolph Weisenhaven, who resided at Tophouse many years ; William White, former occupier of Tophouse and Tarndale ; and Nathaniel Fowler, late runholder in the same district, each gave testimony. They were unanimous in stating that snow and frost were no obstacles to the proposed line. Mr Dishe.r stated_ that he mustered once a month all one winter. They said that snow was occasionally deep in exposed gullies, but not sufficient on levels to impede traffic. They all spoke highly of the quality of the land, and said there were large areas fit for settlement. No grain but oats had been grown hitherto because there was no market for other descriptions within reach. Oats grew between sft and 6ft high and yielded well. They also spoke of the quantity and quality of fruit grown in the district.
