CONTRIBUTIONS are SOLICITED towards providing the ANNUAL TBEAT for the in-, mateeof the above Institution, also in aid of the Band Fund. The number of children has increased last year by 57, and there are now 274 inmates. The Government provide the Christmas, Dinner, but do not contribute anything towards the Treat or the maintenance of the Band Fund.The public have had many opportunities ' or noticing the efficiency of the Burnham' Band, which has hitherto been maintained by the Master, supplemented by outside aid. .._; There"are2sboys who have instruments, and there are 20 without. The Master has expended between £100 and £200 in ■ftTffiTifrMTiiTig' the Band, and the Bandmaster's services cost £52 per annum. The Band plays Out in the open every night for the amusement of the children, and in winter time in the schoolroom, besides assisting at .concerts and entertainments, &cThus many an evening passes away cheerfully and with contentment, which otherwise might not be the case. Boys leaving the Institution are enabled to join other Bands (this has taken place), thus furnishing them with a source of enjoyment ana occupation, besides having a strong tendency to prevent their falling into temptation or seeking amusement in objectionable ways. It is feared that 1101688 the public come forward in aid, the Master wiU be obliged to discontinue the Band, in fact he has stated as much.
