Company; The schooner Torea, Captain Qrundy, j arrived on Saturday from Kaipara,£fter an eight I The barque G.M. Tvckenf rom Newcastle for this port, was spoken Qf by the Jessie Nicol in Cook's Strait on the 87th ult. The well known yacht Dave is to be offered for sale to-day at auction without reserve. Should a purchaser be found for her, it is to be wished that she may be entered in the yacht race at the coming regatta. If not sold, she will no doubt, be entered both for the regatta here and the one at Akaroa on the 16th inst. The barque Bells, for Cape Town, was towed to sea on Saturday afternoon; and the Conference, for Newcastle, is the evening. The Sells is expected to proceed from the Cape to Mauritius for a cargo for this port andDunedin. The brig Moa left Kaipara for Dunedin on the 23rd ult., and Captain Grnndy, of the Torea, further reports the brigantines ; Marmion and Jane Anderson sailing from Kaipara. also on that date. The Sovereign and the Look-out, for Sydney, were the only 'vessels loading at the mills when the Torea left. During this month and January passen- ' gets by the Union Company's steamers to or from' Melbourne will be afforded the pleasure of a visit to the largest of the West Coast Sounds — Milford Sound. The steaiogrs each way are announced to call at MiSjord Sound, en route during (he holidajTseason. The December Time Table and Guide issued by the Union Company states that the Waibora is to* leave Glasgow next March, and is expeotod to ran out to Melbourne in forty-roar clays, coming thence to N^wSealand. ■The 8.3. Wakatipu and the s.s. Eotorua came in yesterday morning from Port Chalmers, rather an exceptional cireunstance for two red funnel steamers to remain over Sunday at this port. Both steamers left Port Chalmers on Saturday evening, the Wakatipu getting away first. Of late thia steamer, which for a long while ' -was regarded a very comfortable but very boat, and quite "out of the running" with such a steamer j as the Eotorua, has pushed herself through tha water at a speed which has very much surprised th« " knowing ones " in steamer matters, and which has caused almost a flutter of excitement among some of TJhB boats of the fleet whose pretensions to superiority for being fast like " the pride of life," seem destined to be brought to -" naught. . When the Taiaroa left Wellington the other day a couple of hours before Che could not under-stand-seeing the Wakatipu lying here at the wharf when they arrivea, and upon being , informed she had made fast there an hour before their astonishment correspondingly - increased. Yesterday she beat the Botorua'a time by over haS an hour between Port Chalmers and this port, and all that remains now to «»tabCsh her reputation for speed is, &s come one yesterday remarked, " tolbaye a brush with the Hinemoa." She - leaves to-day for Wellington, and Sydney, sad the Rotorua for Auckland via way ports on the East Coast.

I The Conference, on Saturday night, had I a fair number of passengers for Sydney. [Just as the vessel was leaving, one of the passengers, Mr Flockton, put off to her in a dingy, which he managed to leave_ before rnnirrnfr sure' of the barque, and with the Unpleasant result that he was for several minutes immersed to the brim of his hat Tmfcil a rope. Toeing' secured round him, he was hoisted on board the Conference. - The steamer Mahinapua, from Dunedin and Oamaru, and the WaitaH, from Oamaru, arrived on Saturday, and left—the former, in the afternoon; for Wellington, and the WaitaM at night, with the outgoing mail for the San Francisco steamer. The Hawea, from Wellington and the North, arrived at 6.30 a.m., and left in the afternoon for Donedin, to be docked and cleaned.

... It has been suggested to get up an excnr-tnn-n fr\iih«>fitnyfc>nmiT«T«ndg«.Tn3 r«»/»V ritirrng the holidays. The Union Company would, ■were inducement forthcoming, lay on one of their steamers, and it is believed a two days' stay ashore at the Chathams could be ensured to the passengers, allowing a week for tie excursion to occupy. Mr Puflett, the manager for the Union Company, should be communicated with by all who think of making such a trip. . ■ The popular annual trip to the wonderful Sounds on the West Coast of this island will thie season be made bytfce newand handsome steamship Tarawera. With such a vsssel to travel by those who treat themselves to this excursion have the assurance that their holiday will not be marred by the incumbrance and discomfort met with in a small steamer crowded with passengers. The Tarawera is to leave on the excursion about New Year's Day. On anniversary day the steamer Hawea will this year make the excursion to Akaroa and back to Lyttelton. The tradesmen's picnic from Kaiapoi is to be held at Akaroa on the holiday named, And arrangements have been made with the Union Company to carry the picnicers in the Hawea. At Akaroa a regatta,' which, from the programme published, is to surpass any regatta previously held at Akaroa, is the event of the day. The industrial exhibition, usually held the same day, is fixed for , January Ist, at Akaroa: The annual issue of return excursion tickets at holiday season reduced rates has oommenced at the agencies of the Union Steamship Company. These tickets, it is announced, may be obtained during the present month, and January and February next, and are available for return to the end of March. Reductions are made to passengers going either to coastal ports or to Melbourne, Sydney, or Hobart, but only on return tickets it will be observed.
