ROAD BOARDS.
: ELLESMERE. The usual monthly meeting of the Elles- | mere Eoad Board was held in the district office, Leeston, on December lat. Present —Messrs J. B. Campbell (chairman), E. Lockhead, H. P. Hill, J. Boag, and M. Jone3. The following correspondence was fead and dealt with :—Petition from Mr J. Flood and others, asking the Board to form Sarsfield street, Southbridge. The Board consented to do the work after the road shall have been properly dedicated. Petition from Mr D. Sutherland and about twenty others, asking to have a footpath formed from Union Bank to Sarsfield street. Granted on Mr Desborough's frontage, the parties interested to furnish one-third of cost. Letter from Mr Stewart, offering to rent the land laid off through his paddock for a road. The Board declined the application in the meantime. Letter from Mr T. Wauchop, drawing attention to the foul state of the drainage in Southbridge. Consideration postponed. Letter from Mr L. V. Desborongh, calling attention to the state of Lee street, Southbridge, between Wauehop-e corner and the Presbyterian Church, particularly the portion opposite section No. 22. The overseer was instructed to inspect the spot. Letter from Messrs A. Cameron and Co., with reference to the roads laid off through Mr Bealey's property. The Board was prepared to consider the formation of the roads when satisfied that they had been duly conveyed.. Letter from Mr E. B. Willis, calling attention to a hollow in the
road opposite his gate, also to the general state of the road from Flood's comer to Bishop's corner. The Board left the matter in the overseer's hands. Letter from. Mr J. Frame, asking permission to erect a verandah in front of his premises m Southbridge. Permission granted on the usual conditions. Letter from Mr H. Harman, with similar request, granted. Letter from Mr W. Stewart, requesting settlement for land bought from him for a road. The money to be paid as soon as the conveyance shall have been completed Letter from Mr S. Cargo, asldng the Board to shmgle a portion of Graham's road, near junction with Branch Drain road. Granted Petition from Mr L. T. Desborough and others, asking the Board to form a footpath a distance of about thirteen chains from English Church to Southbridge to towards Flood'e corner. Granted, on condition that the parties interested provide one-third of cost prior to commencing the work. Mr J. Manson waited on [ the Board, and called its attention Ito the state of the public drain near his land. Mr Nicholson applied to have the drain deepened and widened on Lower Lake road from Tramway to Drain road, Mr McConiey applied to have the same work done. The Board decided to cut a drain through McConfcey's land to relieve water from the road. Mr Coo and Mr Blake applied to have the drain from Beserre 312 to tho Lafre deepened and widened. Mr Bloke applied for an outlet for the drain on his farm to the Lake. Granted. Mr A. McLachlan applied for permission to put in pipes across Drain road. Granted. Mr Lockhead moved, and Mr Hill seconded— "That the ratepayers be advised to take the necessary steps for bringing the sth clause of the Small Birds Nuisance Act into operation." Carried. Mr Jones moved—" That the Board grant from its funds the sum of 50s for the purpose of collecting eggs of small birds, to iflpe following educational districts, if applied for : — Southbridge, Leeston, Lakeside, Brookside, Killinchy and Dunsandel." The resolution failed to meet with a seconder, and consequently lapsed. The following tenders were openod and dealt with :—For the supply of 100 casks cement —Accepted, T. and E. Pavitt, at 14s 9d; declined, W. White and Co., 15s 9Jd; W. Montgomery and Co., 16s; L. B. Desboroagh, 16s 3d; W. Neighbours, 17b 9d; Johnston, Wood and Co., 18s. For ehingling Lake road to Dixon'e corner—Accepted, J. Gasken, Is 2d per yard; declined, J. McClelland, Is 4sd; H. Boyle, Is s£d; R. McNeil, Is s|d; D. Kellahan, la 8d; H. Woods, 2a; H. Hamilton, 2s. For filling in gullies by the Domain gate—Accepted, D. Kellahan, JE2O ; declined, J. Sloan and Co., .£lB 10s; J. Coombridge, .£22; W. Haybourne, .£23; J. Henley, j>2s. For metalling Stewart's road—Accepted. James Millar, Is 6£d per yard. Declined, J. Hampton, Is lid; J. Coombridge, 2s; E. McNeil, 2s lfd. For shingling Lookhpad road—Accepted, W. Haybourne, la 4£d. Declined, J. McClelland, Iβ 4sd; H. Hamilton, Is sd; E. McNeil, Is Bsd; J. Houston, Is 7d; W. Woods, Is 9£d; D. Kellahan, Is lid. The overseer's monthly report was read and considered. Payments—The pay-sheet, amounting to .£563 16s 4d, was examined and passed for payment. The Board then adjourned.
