CONTRIBUTIONS are SOLICITED towards providing the ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TBEAT for the inmates of the above Institution, also in aid of the Band Fund. The number of children has increased last year by 57, and there are now 274 inmates. The Government provide the Christmas Dinner, but do not contribute anything towards the Treat or the maintenance of the Band Fond, The public have had many opportunities of noticing the efficiency of the Bnrnham Band, which has hitherto been maintained by the Master, supple- . mented by outside aid. There are 25 boys who have instruments, and there are 20 without. The Master has expended between .£IOO and in maintaining the Band, and the Bandmaster's services cost .£52 per annum. The Band plays out in the open every night for the amusement of the children, and in winter time in the schoolroom, besides assisting at concerts and entertainments, &c. Thus many an evening passes away cheerfully and with contentment, which otherwise might not be'the case. Boys leaving the Institution are enabled to join other Bands (this has taken place), thus furnishing them with a source of enjoyment and occupation, besides haying a strong tendency to prevent their falling into temptation or seeking amusement in objectionable ways. It is feared that unless the public come forward in aid, the Master will be obliged to discontinue the Band, in fact he has stated as much. The public are respectfully and urgently requested to contribute to both or either of the above objects, which are eminently worthy of their sympathy and support.
