He badbean sUent on the question in committee, as the Minister of Public Works had informed hon. members that the amount of £180,000 placed on the estimate* of the intended expenditure of the three million loan would only take the -north tin* to a common point, from which it would afterwards ba necessary to decide whether the line should be taken to the West Coast, the Tophouse route or that along the East Coast. In ;thr Canterbury caucus hs sdvooated ntting aside £400,000 for the line. He considered that Canterbury* share of the loan ought to hay* been at least one million, and that the cost of the West Coast line ought to hay* been provided for. Mr G. H. BlaokwaU thought the agitation was either too Ist* or too early, and the importance ot the West Coast line was snob that th* public would make its voice thereon heard.
