At to-day's wool sale a good demand was again experienced, 9,200 bales being offered

The homeward mails via Brindisi, which left Melbourne on the 13 th April, were delivered in London to-day.

The Australian cricketers are going to Epsom to-morrow to witness the Derby.

The death is announced of Sir John Holker, aged fifty-four. The deceased was Attorney-General in the last Beaconsfield administration, and was in January last appointed Lord Justice of Appeal.

The reports which have been current to the effect "that Mr. Parnell intended to resign his seat in Parliament are now declared to be without foundation.

In the House of Commons last night the Irish Repression Bill was again under consideration. In the course of the debate Mr Dillon made a speech, in which he stated that as the landlords were continning to evict their tenants for nonpayment of rent, he must refnsß to denounce the commission of outrages against landlords. Mr Gladstone replied in strong terms of reprobation of the attitude assumed by Mr Dillon, and stated that the Government felt that it was imperatiye that the Repression Bill should become law. CONSTANTINOPLE, May 23. Further communications have passed between the Porte and the Ambassadors of England and France on the subject of the despatch of the squadrons to Alexandria. Satisfactory assurances have been given, and the Sultan has been apprised of the fact. , The Grand Vizier, it has transpired, has promised if the squadrons are noyr, withdrawn that they shall, be called upon to return, in the event of any necessity for their presence iv Egyptian .waters arising. It has transpired that Lord Duff-tin, British representative* and Marquis de Nolles, French Ambassador, in their replies to the demands of the Porte, have promised that the united squadron of French and English ironclads shall be withdrawn from Egyptian waters as soon as order has been restored in that country. CAIRO, May 23., It has transpired that the informal parleying, which was proceeding with a view to bring about the termination of {he existing crisis, has failed. It is officially announced that the Osar has determined to put a stop to the violent attacks which for some time past have been made upon the Jews in Southern Russia, and that inexorable punishment will be inflicted upon perpetrators of such Outrages.
