WANGANUI, May 24.
The Wanganui Annual Steeplechase Meeting took jplaea on the raceoouraa yesterday, and was fairly successful. The attendance of ths publio was scarcely so large aa last year,
though stand and lawn wore well patronised The totalisator was well patronised, £1000 being put through. The principal event was a great success, as Alaro, the winner, waa sQpposed not to have a show. Ho was bought as a hack three months ago for £20. Accidents : were numerous, but the most serious was that which btftU Edwards, the rider of Te Whetu, but he was able to gat about after a short rest. Thei events are as umier :— Wan&antji ST_apii-c_tASB of 225 soys. Three miles. Mr E. Higgie's _laro, by Daydawa, 10st 51b (Heatonl 1 Mr Wilson's New Year," by Bavensworth, 10stl21b ';.•... (Pollock) 2 Mr J. Rao's Grey Momus, 10st 121b (Owner) 8 Lonehand, Baron, Te Whetu, Catoh'em, Chandler, Snuray, Skylark also ran. _ Alaro and New Year made tho running from tho fall cf the flag, and jumping splendidly had tho race all to themselves. The formes won by ten lengths. Te Whetu fell when going well, about one mile from home. Lonehand and CatchVm refused at the Btono wall, and were taken baok to the paddock. The Baron finished nowhere. Time for three [ miles, 6min __«cc. I Maiden Stssbplkchase cf 100 soys. Two and a half miles. Mr G, H. Gibson's Mount, aged (J. Rae) 1 Mr W. Douglas* A.G , 4 yrs ... (A. Keith) 2 Dr. Connolly's Dhudeen, aged (TT. Nicholson) 3 Eaven, Dew, Sunray, and Parikoronga also ran. It waa a good rase between the first two. Time, 6—ia 3.9e0. Grand Stand Steeplechase. Mr W. Douglas* Baron -. ... (Keith) 1 MrW. Douglas* A.G (Heaton) 2 Te Whetu and Grey Momus also ran. Lonehand baulked at tha -tone wall, and caused Grey Momus and Te Whetu to stop also. None of the trio got any farther, and Mr Douglas' pair cantered over for the stake*.
