LYTTELTON.

A special meeting of this Oounoil was held on Wednesday, at noon, present—Mr H. Allwright (the Mayor), and Ors. Macdonald, Btinson, Smith, Webb. There were also present the cflloers of tbe Council. Mr Allwright, on signing the requisite declaration to ail the office of Mayor for the ensuing year, said he would not have sought the position again had one or other of the older councillors come forward. He was looking forward to a holiday for a year, but tbe burgesses had again honored him by his re-election. He gladly accepted the position, whioh was now becoming one that took up a great deal of time. He gave all credit to his colleagues the members of the Council for the suooess whioh in borough matters had been achieved, and the present financially sound oondition of the borough. He then referred to some remarks made by Or. Webb with reference to the late election, and said that he took exception to the remark made that bis supporters at the election were working for him because of the pickings they made out of the Oouncil. Or. Macdonald congratulated Mr Allwright on his re-election, and spoke in most complimentary terms of Mr Allwright's past services. Or. Smith said it was well known that Mr Allwright had endeavored to get an old councillor to come forward, and failing that he was again prevailed upon to oomo forward. Or. Smith congratulated the Oouncil, town and borough on Mr Allwright'a return, and said he did so without any disparagement to the defeated candidate, Mr Webb. Or. Webb said the receipts of the borough were over £6000, and he did not congratulate the borough upon its position. He thought some of Mr Allwright'* supporters had worked for bim because of the prospective pickings to be got out of the Oounoil. Mr Webb spoke strongly upon the circumstances attending the late election, in whioh be considered be had been defeated through certain influences of a not very creditable oharacter. The Mayor then proposed the health of the officers of the Council. Mr Rogers, the town olerk, suitably responded. The health of the Press was proposed by the Mayor and sup-, ported in flattering terms by Dr. Bouse, the representatives of ths Prbbb and "Times' responding.
