ASHBURTON.
On Saturday, at noon, about fifty people met in the Ashburton Court House for the nomination of Mr £. G. Wright, who was proposed by Mr John Orr and seconded by Dr. Trevor. Mr W. Martin, Beturning Offioer, then declared Mr Wright duly elected without opposition. Mr Wright spoke of tbe high compliment whioh had boon paid him of being returned without opposition, and attributed the fact not to any ability of his, but to the oircumstanoe that he had always sought to promote the welfare of the whole district, and had not advocated individual class interests. He reminded his hearers of the importance of their district, which exported a quarter of the grain exportation of the colony, and attributed any influence he had been able to exercise to the faot of his having had so important a constituency at his back. He did not think New Zealand need have any fear of competition arising from the Amerioan grain trade.
[Applause.] The proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks proposed to the Beturning Officer by Mr Wright.
