CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
A meeting Of the Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Present —The Moat Bey. the Primate, Dra. Coward and T _-bull, Messrs O. O; Bowen, _. 0. J. Stevena, J. Inglis, J. 0. Veel, W. J. W. Hamilton, J. D. Enys, B. W. Fereday, F. de 0. Malet, H. B. Webb, and the Bey. C. Eraser. Mr F. de 0. Malet was voted to the ohair.
Mr Fereday obtained leave to postpone the resolution standing in hia name till the next meeting of the Board.
Mr Stevens moved-—* 1 That the opinion of the School of Agriculture be obtained on the expedienoy of prizes for proficiency in the differ.—rs-bjecta taught in the Sohool being established." —Mr W. 3. W. Hamilton seconded.—The Bey. 0. Fraser did not wish to otter any opposition to Mr Stevens' motion, but thought the object sought by the mover . woold be facilitated by the words—" That the oommittee of the Sohool of Agriculture be requested to consider and report on" being substituted for the first portion of the resolu* tion f —Mr Stevens consented, and the motion ai amended read aB followe:—" That the com* mittee of the Sohool of Agriculture be re* quested to consider and report on the expe-. dienoy of prizes for proficiency in the different subjects taught hi the Sohool being established." This waa unanimously carried. ; The report of the estates oommittee of; November 23rd, 1881, recommending the Board. to authorise the College seal being; affixed to transfer G. Tisob to P. Tisch, P.- : Tiseh to J. O'Shea, of reserve 112_ j transfer:" Pannett to J. M. Fjiirze of reserve 1170j' transfer A. Dalxell to William Dalzell of reserve 1150, waa next oonaidered and agreed to.: -.. ' , - ■■ -~ ; The Board then proceeded to consider and agree to anndry recommendations of thai < College oommittee, viz.—-The re-appoiutmen. 'of the, fourth assistant master at the Boys' High Sohool, and to authorise the oommittee; to adjust hia salary if required; also certain: alterations in the College regulations. It was agreed that thia Board suggests to the flenite of' the University the advisability of replacing elementary astronomy in the list fit the ' branches of physioal science.—j On the motion of Mr Bowen, aeoonded by Mr Webb, the follQ wing recommendation of tha oommittee waa agreed to, the Bey. C. Fraser dissenting:— " The oommittee recommends: that aa there ia no teaching in the College in; mental science and in constitutional history and jurisprudence, these subjects be for thej present removed from the Hat of subjects i_4 which the College undertakea to exam_-, %kS that the Board of Governors be requested to -make provision for : the teaching of oonsticu* Jional history and jurisprudence at its earliest, convenience. This regulation to oome into; -force in 1883 to avoid any chance of any injustice being done by reason of students having already entered in these subjects.'*
-'A' suggested alteration in regulation 7as follows:-—" That Section L be repealed, and the following inserted instead .—Students will receive credit for having kept three years' terms only on condition of their having passed during their undergraduate course ten (10) examinations, whereof at least three (3) must be taken together at the end of the first (Ist) year, and' at least three (3) at the end of the second (2nd) year, and at least two (2) at the end of the third (3rd) year." Consideration was deferred till the next meeting of the; Board. --
On the'motion of the Chairman, seconded by the Primate, authority was given to print the calendar- for 1882—Mr Bowen moved,: and Mr W. 3. W. Hamilton aeoonded—"That; Mr F. de o. Malet be authorised to sign cheques during tbe absence of Mr Montgomery from Christchuroh." This was agreed to.— On the motion of Mr Bowen, seconded by Mr _nglis, it was resolved—" That the Board appoint Messrs Justin Aylmer and B_ Piper! Governors' of the High Sohool, Akaroa," The Chairman called attention to the Public Library expenditure as under:—lnthe year 1874, £1258 Os 7d; 1875, £639 7e IOd;! 1876, £1689 12a _d; 1877, £1853 6a 10d; ! 1878, £1750 6a 3d; 1879, £1539 8s 4i j 1880, £2322 9s 3d; and 1881, to September 30th, £1603 5a "9d.—-Mr Fereday called attention to the next meeting of the Go* verning Body falling on Boxing Day, and; moved — "That this, meeting adjourn till Monday, January 9th, at 3 p.m." Thia being agreed to the Board adjourned accordingly.
