Three per cent. Consols have further declined & and are quoted to-day at ijof. New Zealand securities remain at yesterday's quotations. Adelaide wheats ex store, 575; New Zealand ditto, 52s 6d; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 425; Australian tallow, best beef, 39s per cwt; beat mutton, 41s 6dL The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company has declaiecl s dividend of 2. per cent, for the halfyear ended September 30 th, and a bonus of 2 per cent.
The election for the vacancy ia the representation of Stafford, caused by the death of Mr A. McDonald, the Liberal member, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr T. Salt, a Conservative, by a majority of 297. The Irish voters claim that the Conservative victory was due to their support.
Sir Charles Dilke, Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, has left London for Paris, to confer with M. Gambetta and his colleagues in regard to the Anglo-French Commercial Treaty negotiations. \
WASHINGTON, November 19,
The trial of Guiteau for the murder of President Garfield was continued tdjday. Guiteau's demeanour in Court is j§_ite callous. An attempt was made on his life to-day as he was being conveyed back to prisoa. A mounted man fired at him with a revolver, and wounded him iti the hand. The perpetrator of the outrage, with the aid:of his horse, succeeded in effecting bis escape, and is still at large.
