Resuming onr consideration of tho origins! pictures now being exhibited in Worcester attest west, we may next notice Mr J. Peel's two ess. tributioas, "A Bainy Sky, Kawhaka," as- " Moonlight." The first of tntae is a geo. effective picture, except that Mr Peel baa failsJ in the running stream ; tha second ia notes happy. Mrs H. Campbell exhibits two fesisb heads—prettily painted bnt weak in tha fk-_ tints—and a good study of some petunia.. Ms Beetham has three flower pieces. Mr T. Fhsslf ha_ four pictures, one of thorn being a Vim ef Oxford Terrace and Montreal street brides. It is not over harshly criticising Mr Blni-Iys warto say that he haa yet much to learn. His ww_ ia honest, and in-so-far is pleasant to look at, lixit hia knowledge of coloring and method taigbt easily be improved. Mr W. H. Mrs Ecto shows five original works, _1 of tilquality. Tho elovatica iwtf excellent, but we cannot congratulate Mr 23&»' dison on the figures or tho horse introdnessThe latter, in particular, ia a very „ea_--B8« specimen of the equine species, and by no i_«sg- s adds to the effect of the drawing. Sir,*." Beetha—'s "View of Apia Harbour" » ES "" fully managed and painted. His other picture* entitled in the catalogue "Tiinaru S«4s* water," is not bo successful. In conclusion, we cannot help coogratu_ting the Art Society on the success of this tiieir first exhibition. By the number and merit of the original works produced is seen the great stride, made in the study of the fine arts in Christehurch of late years. The existence of the society will tend farther te foster this material progress, and the present exhibition will serve a* a Undmork in the history of the fine arts in this city. It ia to be trusted that the public will show their interest by properly suppor+ine tbe movement Colonial life is not io £e>tl etic that we can afford to look coldly on endeavcrß to raise the mind out of the hnm-drnm of every day life. The aims of the society are most laudable, and deserve the sympathy of the publio, and the latter may v_ry possibly gain more than they pive by acting as we suggest. The exhibition will be open every day for Eoroe time to come between the honra of ten a m. and six p.m., and the price of admission will be one shillinc.
