ENGLISH AND FOREIGN.
[betttee ? s telegrams.] LONDON, January 17. The Hon. W. E. Gladstone has recovered from the cold from which he was recently suffering. The Rev. Q. P. Dale and the Eev. Ewright, Ritualistic clergymen, who were imprisoned for contempt of orders of the Court of Arches, have been discharged from custody, it having been found that writs under which they were arrested were defective. Further news to hand from Central Asia states that the Turcomans recently made an unsuccessful sortie from Geok Tepe, and were heavily repulsed by the Russians, who then stormed the outworks. The conflict was most sanguinary, and resulted in a heavy loss to both sides. Owing to the large quantity of floating ice on the Thames the race between Hanlan and Laycocfc could not take place to-day. It has been arranged that the match shall, the state of the river permitting, take place on Saturday afternoon next, the 22nd inst. CONSTANTINOPLE, January 17. The Porte has sent a Circular Xote to its representatives abroad, requesting them to propose to the Powers that the latter should send delegates to a Conference at Stamboul to negotiate for the settlement of the Greek frontier question. The Porte desires that a conference should be held in lieu of arbitration as proposed by the Powers.
