In the House of Lords last night the Irish Tenants' Compensation Bill, which was sent up from the House of Commons oame under discussion. After debate, the rejection of the Bill was moved, and carried by 282 to 51. August 5. Sixty-three Liberal Peers voted with the majority on the Bill for compensation to Irish tenants. CALCUTTA, August 4. Intelligence has been received from Afghanistan that Ayoob Khan has advanced to Merkarez for the purpose of attacking the British troops under General Phayre, which reached Ghaman from the Bolan Pass on their way. to reinforce ■ General "Burrows at Candahar, but were unable to proceed owing to the disturbed state of the country. It is further stated that Ayoob is sending a strong force to intercept supplies from the Bolan Pass.
Orders have been given to General Bioberts to march with the Northern division of the British army in Afghanistan, numbering 10,000 men, to the relief of General Burrows at Oandahar. General Roberts has further been ordered to act in conjunction with the troops under Generals Phayre and Sandeman from the Bolan Pass, 80 that the combined forces may operate against Ayoub Khan. It now' transpires that the telegraph line between Cabal and the frontier was not cut by hostile tribes, as at first supposed, but was interrupted from some other cause.
