There was a large attendance, and keen competition, though care preponderated* Twenty-two thousand bales were purchased for Yorkshire and the Continent. Prices show an average advance of to 2d per lb. on scoured and greasy respectively.

LONDON, February 16. During to-day's sitting, the House of Commons went into committee on the Irish Distress Belief Bill An amendment was proposed that an advance should be made towards the relief fund from the Imperial Treasury, instead of from the Church surplus, but it was defeated on a division. The three per cent consols are at 971. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain ia 1,760,000 quarters.
Arrived —Malsgate. The steamship Chimborazo has sailed. The main portion of her cargo, which was damaged, has been left behind. February 17. At the wool auctions during the past week 8031 bales have been catalogued, Australian realising 10 per cent, advance. There was a large attendance of home and foreign buyers. ROME, February 16. The Pope has issued an Encyclical letter, declaring that the Jaw of divorce has an immoral effect. [MELBOURNE " AGE " SPECIAL.] LONDON, February 17. Lord Salisbury is still in a critical condition. The Chimborazo sailed on the 16th.
