GENEROSITY TO THE RAILWAY EMPLOYES.
TO THE BDITOB OF THB PBESf. Sib,—Now that Sir George Grey has been returned as a representative of this city, I think it an object of importance that the electors should attentively regard the actions of himself and party, thereby to learn whether they are sincere in their professions, j The generosity of the Government in granting leave of absence to the railway employes for two hours on Wednesday last, to enable them to attend at the .polling booths and record their votes, was highly commendable—an act of kindness duly appreciated by the men, and which was the means of securing many votes for the Ministerial candidates which would otherwise have gone to the Opposition. But, what can now be said for the generosity, the liberality of that' Government, which deducts from the pay of the not-too-well paid workman that time which waa devoted to the exercise of the franchise ? Surely, the " noble old roan," the champion of the " down-trodden serf," will not permit so great an in j ostice to be inflicted upon those who relied on his assurances and believed him a friend. The matter being brought under notice, it now remains to be aeen what course he will adopt. ... .. j If the privilege of voting is to be encumbered with lose of pay, may not the work-ing-man very naturally conclude that the liberality of which he haa heard so much ie, after all, but rank humbug? Yea, he will say, " I've been had this time; but, never more." Yours, &0., ■■■ • OmzHH.
