THE UNEMPLOYED AND THE EOAD- ->: BOARDS. : ' ;
;V ", 10 THB SDITOB OF THB rBBSSi ' Sißi—-I see that i the Chrutohuroh people! and the Chrifltchureh newspapers'are calling upon the Read Boards to find employments for' the; unemployed gathered together in Ohrifltchnroh. These demands must prooeed from ignorance of the state of : things prevail-j ing in country districts. If you Ohrietchurch people knew the rate at -which Road Board funds are actually being expended,;and the number of men who, notwithstanding tills,, are tramping the country in search of work, i you would admit that we haVe enough todo ; with' our own unemployed. To find work; Tor people from Christchurch, we should! have to refuse it to those more enterprising' men] who wj engaged in wearily tramping from farm to farm, and from, station to station, i and who now thankfully accept such employ- j ment as Road Board works, including plant-: ing, are able to provide for them. I feel sure' you will admit this would bo neither wise; nor juflfc. .;.:.■-..■ . : " : ; . . Yours, &0., /' , . : A Membeb of i Eoad Boabd.
