PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

COLOMBO BOAD SCHOOL. The annual distribution of prizes in the above school took place in the schoolroom yesterday, at half-past three o'clock. The prizes were given away by the chairman of the school committee, Mr J. Whitelaw, who, prior to distributing the gifts, addressed the children in their several classes, explaining that the rewards were given for general proficiency, progress, and attendance. The prizes were first given to the upper and lower infant schools, and subsequently to the other forms. ( It was explained that the principle of awarding the prizes was according to the number of marks placed to each boy's credit on the recommendation of Mr Oumberworth, the head i master of tbe school. The prizes awarded " first were given for general proficiency in the ' proportion of one in six, next for mapping, then for recitation, Mr Whitelaw saying that ] in this branch the boys were inferior to the girls. Regular attendance came next, thirteen boys being picked out, some of whom ! had not missed a single half day in the year, I ; and out of the remainder none more than four half days. The Rev. Mr Cocks ad- ' dressed the children in a few words of advice ! and encouragement. Mr Hall announced that there would be four weeks' holidays, and ! that the committee hoped the children would : enjoy themselves and come back ready for ', school. The head master called upon the b boys to cheer for the chairman and the com- ■ mittee, who had taken a great interest in 1 them and devoted a great deal of time and , trouble for their benefit. The boys enthusiastically responded, and then the upper classes of the girls had their awards given them, Mr ' Whitelaw explaining how the awards were J made. On the termination of the prize distribution to the elder girls, a bttle girl ' stepped forward, and in the "name of her ' schoolmates presented the head mistress with j a handsome crystal flower-stand and jewel ] box. Mr Whitelaw thanked tbe children in j the name of Mrs Bowmaker for the kind ' feelings whicb had prompted the gift, after l which they sang "Joy Bells" very nicely, ' their young voices blending harmoniously, T and bearing testimony to the excellent manner in which they bad been taught. Mr Alison, one of the committee, addressed ' the girls encouragingly, hoping that those | who had not obtained prizes would not be discouraged, but rather make it a reason for < ! renewed exertion. ' Mr Hall said the holidays would commence ] next week, and he hoped they would all enjoy themselves, and that all would be pre- ; sent at the entertainment to be given ia tbe. < evening. The children having marched out, singing as they went, the proceedings terminated. Ihe following is the prize list:— PRIZE LIST. Boys* Bchool. general proficiency". Standard Vl.—Albert Ward, 1; Wm. The distribution of prizes took place at the above school yesterday afternoon. Mr H. R. Webb, chairman of the school committee, opened the proceedings by congratulating the scholars upon their appearance. He referred to the change that had occurred in the principalship, in cocßsquence of Mr Edge's removal to the North Canterbury district, since they met last. It was feared there would be a difficulty in filling the position, but it gave him great pleasure to state that the committee were very much pleased with the gentleman they had obtained, and with his management during the brief time he had held the position. He regretted that they had not yet secured the services of a head mistress for the infant department, but thought a lady of very high attainments, who had been trained at the Normal School of Christchurch, and possessed a thorough knowledge of the Kindergarten system, would be engaged shortly for that position. He said he was indeed proud to be able to refer to two quondam pupils of the school, who had taken exhibitions at the Girls' High School, Christchurch—he alluded to Misa Milsom and Miss Pitcaithly. He spoke of the healthy state of the attendance roll, which showed that there were 521 scholars attending at the end of March, and that notwithstanding that another school had opened .soon afterwards, the attendance at the end of June was 481, and the average for the last quarter was 465. The books at present showed an attendance of 588. These figures, he thought, were very satisfa—oiy, and conclusive evidence that the school wae progressing. He earnestly asked the parentt to faithfully discharge that very important duty of sending their children puno tually and regularly to school, reminding that progress in their studies was utterly im. possible unless they did so. He thanked th« donors of special prizae, also those who had contributed the many other prizes. Th« names of those who gave the special prizei were—The Lyttelton Borough Council, hi Worship the Mayor, Mr P. Cunningham, Dr Rouse, Mr J. W. Smith, Dr. Donald, Mi Binney, Mr and Mrs Dawe, and Mrs Webl and himself. (Cheers.] He desired t< publicly acknowledge the kindness that thi committer had ever experienced at the hand of the Board of Education. The Board hat provided a convenient house for the heat master, snd, without being asked, bad put th same in repair and had it nicely painted. I was also very gratifying to observe the goo* condition of the school property, both th building and tbe furniture. He said th establishment would bear favorable com panson with any other in the province in thi particular. The following is the list of pr_< awarded:— Upper School. class I. (DP—b). He concluded by wishing them very heartily a merry Christmas and happy New Year. Mr Webb then announced that the next school term would open on the 27th of January, and in the meantime he hoped they would have a jolly Christmas and happy New Year. The sohool responded with hearty cheers for their teachers, the chairman, and the donors of prizes, and the proceedinga terminated.
