Messrs Hanmer and Harper. <° Skcbetaet. Moses Scott, Esq. THIS Company is" organised in response to the wish of a la'ge number of land owners and ratepayers residing: within the Bakaia, Ashbnrton, Mount Hutt, and Alford Forest districts. . It is proposed with a view to the thorough opening up of the above-mentioned districts to commence the line in the township of South Bakaia, extending thence in a south-westerly direction a distance of 5 miles, thence westerly 6 miles to a junction. Thence one branch, of the line wil proceed in a westerly direction to a terminus near the Methven post-office, being in length lOf miles from the j , motion. The other branch of the line will proceed from the junction to a terminus on the south - ide of the north branch of the Ashburton river at a place known as Gongh's crossing The longth of this branch of line will be about 16 miles from the junction. The Directors have laid off the above-men-tioned ines in order that the advantages derived from a railway may be fairly and equally distributed throughout the districts through which the lines pass. One of the lines will especially meet the requirements of tbe Bakaia, Mount Hutt, and the northern part of the Alford Forest districts. The other line after passing through many properties already in an advanced stage of cultivation, will be of special advantage to the inhabitants of the district at the southern end of Alford Forest and the North Ashbnrton district. Tenders have been invite! for the survey of the lines, and the book of reference and a plan of the railway will be made and deposited as soon as possible, in accordance with the provisions of the District Eailways Act, 1877. The Directors do not anticipate that it will be necessary to acquire much land for the lines of railway, as many of the land owners have promised to give land free of cost. The Directors have specially selected these lines of railway, with a view to the rating being adjusted as fairly as possible in accordance with the classification of lands trader the District Eailwaye Act, 1877. The Directors have already met with a large amount of support, half the number of shares having been already applied for. The Chief Office is to be established in Christchurch, and at present at Messrs Hanmee and Habpjbb's offices, Hereford street. Plans can be teen and had on application at the offices of the Company, and at South Rakaia Kailway Station.
