HORORATA RACES AND SPORTS.

These spoite were held on New Year's Day on the recreation grounda The starter of the horse races wae Mr Moffey; the judge, Mr IMgby ; handicappere fo trotting, Messrs Palmer, Jas Oordy,and Moffey ; clerk of the scales, Mr Palmer ; starter for men's races, Mr Ttaos Ward ; judge, Mr Griffiths The course was, as might be expected in the maiden tfiort in thisdistrict in the racing line, rather rough, but the committee of this year's eportp, backed by the efforts of the other inhabitants of the district, mean to have it ploughed up and laid do*n in English grass by next year, with whatever other improvements that are necessary that lie within their means. Mr Bcott, of the Coalgate Hotel, had the booth on the ground, and gave entire eatisfaction. Messrs Burtenehaw and Smith, of the mounted police, were on the ground and helped most efficiently in keeping the course, but in other respects good .order prevailing on the ground, their duty was light. The children of the district had also races, &c, for a case of assorted toys valoe £5, in Mr Prtlmer"s paddock, as also a plentiful supply of buns, tec. The following is an account of the varioae events: —
