AQUATICS.

G.B.G. SCRATCH RACES. - A series of pair-oar scratch races took place on Saturday in connection with the 0.8.0., when some very good rowing was shown. There was a very good attendance of spectators, and generally the events were well contested. Mr Douglas acted as Btarter, and sent the boats away well together. We most not omit to speak in terms of. commendation of the rowing of Grierson and Lean, which was excellent throughout the heats pulled by them Altogether, considering that it was the first of the season, and rowed by scratch crews, the gatheriog of Saturday augurs well for the success of the boating season of 1876-7. The following iB a detailed account of the various heats:—

PIBST heat. Cygnet, north bank (Grierson, jnnr, and Lean ; Dunnage, cox) 1 Swan, south bank (Crawley and Tancred, Dixon, cox) 2 This was won by two lengths. SECOND HEAT. Tui, north bank (Jones and Harding, i Mann cox) 1 I Swan, south bank (Lananze and Souter, Dixon cox) ... 2 Both boats got well away together. After '' a few strokes the Bwan got the lead, and

held it for about a hundred yard's, when the Tui got on equal terms. On reaching the coiner the Tui had a lead of about half a length, but the Swan having inside place got ahead on rounding. The Tui, however, put on a spurt, and after a hard tussle succeeded in winning a well pulled race by about half a length.
