PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.
[By Electric Telegraph] ; ;
[FROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, July 17. The Auckland caucus on Saturday was anything but satisfactory to the medium members of that province. When Messrs Whitaker, Hamlin, and. Macfarlane were rejected as members of the committee, Sir R. Dougla3 got up and said it was manifest that something was intended to be hidden, or the composition of such a one-sided committee would never be insisted on. The Canterbury, Otago, and Auckland committee held a meeting this forenoon. All that "passed was that certain proposals were made by Otago, which ar* to be further considered. A statement in this evening that a direct want of confidence motion is to be proposed, is without foundation. What the Otago scheme is, is not made known, but in the lobbies it is said to involve each island taking over its share of the colonial debt, and thereafter meeting their engagements with the English creditors, the powers, functions, and the expenditure of the Federal Govemmejjt being limited. The Canterbury men are less hot-headed than their associates, and appear anxiops more to gain time, in order to have the voice of the constituency qn the proposed scheme. The Government intended to propose two select committees, one for each island, to determine the boundaries of the counties. The details of the Counties Bill are generally condemned. The San Francisco Mail Committee had a meeting this morning. Sir 3, Vogel wants 1500 ton boats to do the coastal service, and Mr Macandrew says unless it is Continued to Port Chalmers, he will vote for ;the discon ..nuance of the service altogether.. The financial debate is expected to come on to-ncoTTow. • ■- •.• ■
