ASHBURTON.
The monthly meeting of this Board was held on-JCnes-dayy Jnly 4th.. Present—MrJohn Grigg (chairman), Messrs Dowding, Williamson, Buliock, and Hunt. An application was read from Mr Jeff, for Messrs Wilkin and Thompson, foi' permission to make a ditch, and put in a culvert across Graham's road. The overseerwas instructed to examine the locality, and report at) the next meeting. An application for a small bridge across the creek near"Mr'Wilson's farm, was granted. An application signed - by Dr Trevor, Mr Standish, and seventeen others, asking that the. by-road leading ton the cottages on the.-South side of the! Ashburton and Beach roads may beiorrned, was granted. The overseer was instructed to do the necessary work when any other, work should be required in the same locality.,-,- An, application from Norman ;riP, Thompson, for a culvert over the creek in frqut of; rural section 20,430, was ordered -tobe executed; also a BmaK bridge f -wSk' authorised to be made over the creek on-the" same road about' three quarters of a mile south. A petition, signed by seventeen ratepayers, was presented; "asking that l rthe road between the boundary fence of Messrs Grigg afad Allan McLean, on ■ 'Lorigbeach} road, may be formed and shingled, this was authorised, and the secretary instruced ' to" give Mr Ede notice to trim his gorse fenced A ! Tetter was read from- Mr E; ; <Cookeoh, asking that a portion of the road contiguous to| bis stables may drained ; the overseer was directed to let the water off and' pa£ in ! a culvert. A letter was considered from tbep hon secretary of the fire brigade, asking .for l a grant of £25 to assist in erecting an engine house ; the secretary was instructed td reply; that at present they had no power to grant the sum asked for. The overseer _ -.report was then considered, on the discussion of the same various works were authorised; The secretary Was directed to write to the Govern*mjent on the subject of the dangerouwbion were being made on the sides of the railway reserve on both sides of theHind's Bridge. Tenders were ordCredT to be. called for making culvert and bridges near section 14460. A pipe culvert on Dawson's road was; ordered to be repaired. A footbridge over Wakanui creek, past Mr Hunt's rdad, was ordered, also the cuttings in the terraces in accordance with the report, werei osderedto be carried out. The:overseer was directed to repair the pipe drain, and sufficubntly raise the piece of road on East street asove the crossing into the station yard ;~the tdsßocks on the footpaths <on the north and south side of Moore street! Were ordered to? be cleared. - The question; of naming tbe ; roads was deferred till next meeting. Instructions were given to thef overseer relative to the shiugle required fori filling the ruts, and a tent for the use of'the labor* gang.'
