ASHBURTON ANNUAL SPORTS.

Judges.—Quoits, Mr Q. Johnston, G. Eidd; ruaning, Qeo. Compton, S. Saanders; jumping, George Parkin. Edward Saunders; dancing, Donald MLean, G. Kidd; walking match, Mr George Compton, B. Buchanan, H. Friedlander, Kobertsbaw; putting the stone, G. Kidd. Starter— J. M. Cambridge. These sports were held on the 27th in a paddock on the south side of the Ashburton River, kindly lent for the occaeion by Mr Jeff. During the early portion of the day the weather wore anything but a promising aspect, being very overcast and threatening, but although dull the rain kept off, to which naturally a large share of the day's success may be attributed.

There was a large number of visitors on the ground, and the Ashburton band was in attendance throughout the day, under the able leadership of Mr J. S. Savage. Coneidering that the band is only of a few months' existence, it deserves to be Very greatly commended for the high state of perfection to which it has attained. The several events were exceedingly well contested, and the day's meeting was a decided success. There were six entries for the District Hurdle race. Compton made the running. The .first half of the distance the men were well together, when Frame took the lead and won easily. The Banning High Jump was closely contested. The Men's Flat race, for 100 yards, for which eight entered, was an exceedingly close race, Digby making almost a tie of it with Knight. There were seven entries for the One Mile race. Smith soon showed to the front, and came in a good first, Simpson second. Pole Vaulting —Mr H. F. Winter deservedly won the first prize in this event. The Walking Match was a close contest between Minnis and Slater until the last lap, when Minnis accidentally caught his foot in a rut, which caused him to lose ground. It will be seen that M. Digby, of Ash burton, carried off both the first prizes for the two Quartermile races, one being a goblet presented by Mr R. Shearman. Q. Knight and Doyle held the respective places of first and second throughout the jumping, and R. Frame and Doyle excelled at Putting the Stone. The following is the prize list:— 1.
