MR NALDER AND MR WEBB.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. J . 7 Sir, —I see that Mr Nalder, 'has again written to your paper, forwarding bis appointment as borough solicitor of Lyttelton,; together with a letter from Dr Foster.' :U; '" 1 Mr Nalder's perception of 1 the rejationpf different facts' appears to be very ranch; the same as that of "Mr F.s aunt " in (Little Dorritt. For any direct bearing these docliments have on the point io question, jhe really might as well have sent you a copy of his baptismal certificate, _- ~.;.; My complaint against Mr Nalder is; that he first suggested to mc to resist the rating of Peacock's Wharf, and afterwards, acted against mc as borough-solicitor, when;, he shut out my defence on the ground that no proceedings had been taken on :my: behalf under certain clauses of the : Municipal Corporations "Act, 1867, which proceedings! fl was his duty, to have taken .while acting ;for me,' " '.' '." '-'.-,* ..' '■ ]' '- .•' ,'' ■- Mr CowlishaW's letter and the newspaper report, both given in my former letter, substantiate the first part of my complaint, and for the rest, it is .all (inadvertently) admitted by Mr NaTder himself,'in his last letter, where he says—" The lastwork ,L did for.Mr Webb in that matter is that bill to have been done on the 27tn June, 1870." . ■ ; -, '. ■ .' A }', ■ :-i '.; 7 r (f Ihe rate for which I was Fned, when. Mr Nalder appeared against Bie in'the.Resident Magistrate's Court, was made on the 23rd 1870. so that, by hip owtishowihghe was paid for professional services rend*red more than-a month.after the rate was made. Moreover, he was not appointed Borough Solicitor till nearly eight months after it was made, and during all that time he was retained by mc in the matter Tbese are the facts ; and no ingenuity in marshalling dates can alter them. ; . It, appears I have erronronaly called the case in the Resident Magistrate's Court ion appeal, when I should have said it was on a a summons for rates ;,but|, at-all events, it was that case 1 referred "to," ' Mr Nalder says he "is porry if his remarks have been unnecessarily severe;" ibut he strongly misapplies tbe meaning' of the term. lam not Conscious of any "severity" in his remarka; altuough in common with many others, I have a strong sense of their offensive and unwarrantable nature. I shall not write again on this subject, which has already; occupied Poftroeh*9Pace in { your column?,. I had forgotten and forgiven circumstances of the rate Case Until Mr balder dreWTny remarks upon himself,- by an *on«alled for attack at the, nomination} in which, bfi.'Tff ferred to my not paying rat'-s for Peacock's wharf. ••■ ;■-•■■■'.-■.• -- <~Ajr.-.ju Yoors, &C-. :;* »■-:,' ~-. .- v .T-jf"r-,..»Hi r Webb.>Lyttelton,Dec. 25tb, 187*.
