AKAROA ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir—ln your issue of the 21st inst Mr Montgomery denies the truth of certain statements made by. Mr Pilliet at the nomination on Saturday last, and stated that no. special votes were withheld from the Okain's Bay Road District daring the last financial year by the Montgomery Government. During the session of the Provincial Council of 1874 the sum of £1500 was placed on the estimates for roads in this district; and after considerable correspondence between the Okain's Bay Road Board- and the Govern ment-to -obtain the expenditure of this money, so lamentably needed, and when the Board had appealed to the member for the district (Mr Pilliet), in letter dated December 16th, 1874, masking that gentleman to urge upon the Govern-!, ment the necessity of the expenditure of this money, .two of the special sums were permitted to ,be. expended by the District Engineer, to the sum of £675, but not till the end of February,, 1875, and after the best season for tbe work had almost past; and; the balance* ' £825. (viz, Okain's Bay to Duyauchelle's Bay, £375 ; Stony; Bay and Little Akaloa, £200;. Le Bon's to German Bay, £250) was permitted to lapse. Anyone who knows this district can easily" understand how angry the inhabitants felt at the withdrawing of these precious votes; for until : Mr Pilliet -became the repreSebtative of this district, the district 'had t 'been altogether neglected, the previous member caring but little for its waritsV'but tot the' honor of its representation. • •'""-'-■ If the electors are unanimous in their 1 support of Mr Pilliet itf-the present election it is because they feel a debt' of'gratitude for the very-earnest endeavors he has shown to bring the necessifiies of this district more prominently before the Provincial. Council and the public. ... V r; ' ~, . , r Tours,&c,T '-,?. ;--,',-• . -A' .A" ; WittiAM;Mp6re, ;, Chairman of the Okain's Road Board.
