MR MASKELL AT THE COST.

On Tnursday; evening Mr Maskell met the electors of this district at the Cust schoolroom. There was a large attendance of electors present. Mr B. L, Higgins 'was voted to the chair. ■-.'.; The chairman briefly introduced Mr Maskell to the meeting, and hoped they would all give him a fair and orderly hearing. Mr Maskell on rising, was received with cheers, and gave his views on the different political questions of the day, his speech being in the main a repetition of his address at Oxford, which appeared 5 in our columns a day or two ago: J In answer to several questions, Mr Maskell said he was opposed to carrying on extensions of railways when there was no probability of their paying working expenses. He was; in favor of free trade, and thought the duty on cornsacks ought to be taken off. He Waa in favor of free education, and would vote against a poll tax, and thought a property tax the most equitable. At the' close' of his address, Mr H.H. Oholmondely proposed "a vote of thanks'to Mr. Maskell .for his address, and Mr Hosegood seconded it. : , . Mr W. H. Zouch proposed, Mr Jno. Ruddenklau seconded, ,as an amendment —" That this meeting' thanks Mr Maskell for his'address, and pledges* itself to do its utmost to secure his return as their member in the next Parliament." ■-.-.■ For the amendment. ... ... IL ; . For the resolution ... ... 13 The chairman declared the < resolution carried. : , '■■ ■-■■ '• Mr Maskell moved a vote of thanks to the chairman, which was carried unanimously.
