Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £7 Bs. Cr Buist asked what sum of money had been expended on the water works in the Heathcote Valley. His Worship said he would endeavor to ascertain and let him know. Cγ Parsons said there was a large amount of the rate still uncollected. He thought' some steps should be taken to get it in. His Worship said £170 were still out, but that only about £100 of it could be collected. It was determined that the Mayor should go through the rate roll with the clerk that week, and take immediate steps to get the money in. Cr Parsons asked if anything had yet been done in the matter of Mr Calo's house. The clerk said Captain Russell had been there that evening to ask the probable rent. Left to the estates committee. Cr Cunningham stated that the Provincial Government had been liberal enough to remit the account for fitting up the tanks for the water supply. The Mayor said that, in company with the foreman of works, he had visited a spot in Exeter street that seemed particularly adapted for the formation of a reservoir. It could be formed by tunneling underneath the street parallel with the sewer, and would cost far less than if formed in the ordinary manner. It could be constructed to hold from 30,000 to 40,000 gallons. He believed it absolutely necessary to have a reservoir for fire prevention purposes at the upper end cf the town.
Cr Cunningham said he agreed with the Major as to tie necessity of having a reservoir at the upper part of the town. Cr Buist asked particulars re filling up culvert on Sumner road. The foreman stated the work had been A nearly finished, and gave a short accnnnt of V the manner in which the various Council B works were progressing. Cγ Buist said that had he been present he > ehonld have protested against the fi , ling up I of the culvert on the Sumner road. The Council then adjourned. = '
