SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
_—: «, WEST CHRISTCHURCH. The usual monthly meeting of this com--mittee was held on Wednesday evening last *t 7.30. Present—Messrs Tancred (chairman), Nairn, Bell, Booth, and Bowie. The secretary apologised for the absence of Mr Craig, who was unavoidably detained. The minutes of last meeting were read and coumrmed. Letters were read from the Secretary for Education, enclosing copy of Provincial Architect's report on Lincoln road school buildings ; also the drill instructor's raply to the complaints of the Rev J. Cum • ming, and the committee's remarks thereon, and stating that the Minister for Education was oTopinion that there was no necessity to alter the regulation respecting drill. It was •decided-tq inform the Minister for Education that thei committee purpose Jto have the repairr by the Provincial Architectxiarried-out at onceV The explanation of the drill instructor was considered satisfactory, and his report was directed to be forwarded to Mr Cumming. The visiting committee reported that they
had procured the cover for the clock case, and that tbe clock had been cleaned. They had also seen Mr Camming on the matter of the alteration of the teaching staff at Lincoln Road schools, and recommended that Mrs Cnllen be appointed infant mistress, instead of second mistress as at present, and that a second mistress be appointed to assist Miss Brittan. The committee decided to appoint Mrs Cutler, as above, at the same salary, and to apply to the Minister for Education for permission to appoint a second mistress at at a salary of £120 per annum. A letter was read from the Rev J. Cumming, forwarding an application from Mr J. 9. Foster, second master, for an increase of salary, and on considering the matter the committee unanimously decided to recommend the Minister of Education to increase Mr Foster's salary to £225, and conditional upon his gaining a higher certificate, subsequently to £250 per annum. The matter of the collection of the household rate was brought under the notice of the committee, and the chairman expressed an opinion that the committee ought to receive a return of monies received by the collector from the Government, so that they might be able to check tbe items in the bank book. This opinion was fully endorsed by the committee, and the secretary was instructed to write to the Minister for Education on the subject and request him to furnish a copy of the collector's returns, so that, as a simple matter of business, the amounts in the returns and the bank book might be compared. The secretary was directed to apply for the amount (£10) previously sanctioned by the Board of Education on the recommendation of the committee, as a subscription towards the] formation of Harry street, leading tothe boys' back entrance to Lincoln road school. The matter of the teaching staff for the temporary school in the Normal school building was next discussed, and tie following appointments were made, subject to the approval of the Minister for Education :— Head master, Mr J. J. El win ; mistress, Mrs Taylor ; assistant master, Mr J. B. Mayne; infant mistress, Miss Deny ; pupil teachers, Mary Lusk, Mary Hal), Kate Thornton, John Allen. The salaries to be the same as before, and the appointments to be subject to one month's notice on either side. Messrs Booth and Nairn were reappointed visiting committee for next month. A report on the furniture required for Normal school by Mr El win, was directed to be forwarded to the Minister for Education. A letter from Mr £. H. Whitcombe for an appointment as French master was read, and the secretary was directed to reply that the committee did not intend to appoint an extra French master. Applications for appointments were received from Miss Kelly, Miss Goodger, and Miss Caygill, and were ordered to be filed. The committee then adjourned.
