CITY COUNCIL.

— ♦ : Thuesday, December 2. A special meeting of the Council was held yesterday morning. Present—His Worship theMayori andCrsThomson,Schmidt, Wood,.' Hawkes, Jones, Ick, Turner, and Gapes. The Mayor said they would first deal the business for which the special meeting had been called, and would then take up the motion, discussion of which was adjourned at last sitting of the Council. The minutes of the last special meeting, having reference to borrowing £9000 for, drainage purposes, were read and confirmed. The advertisement published in the daily papers, giving notice of the proposed loan, was also read. Cγ Ick moved—"That this Council do now confirm the resolution No 2, minute agreed to by the Council, at a special meeting held on the 3rd day of November, 1575, having reference to the borrowing £9000 for drainage purposes, to be undertaken during the present year." Cγ Schmidt" seconded the motion; which" was agreed to. The resolution, moved by hisVWorship the Mayor, referring to the widening of Colombo street, was again read. The following memorandum, framed by the finance committee, at a meeting held by them, was read :—" The committee decided to recommend to the Council thatprivate negotiation be opened up with Mr Morten for -the purchase of land for widening Colombo street; failing a satisfactory settlement, that the Land Clauses Act be put into force." Cr Turner would desire that discussion on the resolution be postponed until another meeting, when he would be prepared with figures to show that it would be for -the interest of the ratepayers if the whole of the section were taken over. After further remarks, a motion for adjourningthe discussion was put and agreed to. Cγ Turner gave notice of the following motion for Monday next i—" That this Council is of opinion that it is desirable to acquire the freehold of town section No. 733, for the purpose of widening Colombo street,; and for other public purposes." • The selected applications for the office of town clerk were next considered. Ultimately, the choice of the Council fell on -Mr F. T. Haskins, who was unanimously appointed to the position of town clerk and ;ity treasurer, the appointments to date from Ist November. ■- -■ v , - It was resolved that the chairmen of the iifferent committees draw up a list of the luties, to be embodied in the form of a con;ract, and also to see to the guarantee required under Clause 162 of the new Moni;ipal \ct. ■ . The Council then adjourned.
