Melbourne.—The " Argue " of the 20th ultimo reports:—ln the import market a fair amount of business has been done to-day. Country orders still come forward freely, and a very much improved trade demand is experienced in consequence. Breadetnfls enow little change. Flour is moving off in email lots at £13 58, bat no special inquiry exists. Wheat is quoted at 6s 7d to 6a Bd, and good dry J Northern would sell at our quotation, but there is 1 not much offering. We hear, however, of a line of 1 2000 bnshels having: changed hands at 6s Bd. In J oats a very depressed feeling: is still perceptible; , quotations range from 38 4d to 3s 9d, according to quality, bat we are without any Jresh business to I report. Maize is decidedly firmer; 4s lid was accepted in the morning, but subsequently this figure was offered and refused for 500 bag parcels, and fis { is now generally required. A large business has been done by auction in sugars, but a decline of 15s ' per ton at least had to be submitted to on brewing; < tine whites, however, realised full rates. The cargo ot Mauritius, per De Morest, comprising: 6443 bags, < was submitted to competition, and from the box , the whole, except 500 bags, was disposed of; 30s 9d was realised for low grainy yellows, to 31s 9d 1 for good; 30s 3d to 30s 9d was obtained for low t yellow crystals. 31s 3d to 31s Gd for good. ' 32s tor fine; 31a for good, to 32s 6d for fine brewing 1 crystals ; 3ls 9d for good, and 32s 9d for fine grainy £ grey; and 34s 9d to 35s lor good whites. Low * Bourbon rations were sold, all faults, at 21s to 225. , Privately, sales of finest whites have been made at J £34 10s to £35. Hops still attract attention. Some \ 46 bales have been disposed of at from Iβ lid to 2s. 1 A line of fifty bales have also changed hands to l arrive, at 2s; the sample was very prime. Brewers* t lots are moving at up to 28 2}d. Teas are • going off to a fair extent; 600 packages have been I quitted at Is 6d to Is Bsd for medium to good s medium congous. Galvanised iron is improving, , and prices have advanced fully 20s. Fencing wire J has risen into notice very suddenly, and since yes- - terday the market has been cleared of beet brands to the extent of several hundred tons, and £20 is t now required for No 8, quotations all round having -1 risen to £18 to £19 for Nos 6 and 7, A parcel of J Calcutta cornsacke has been quitted at 88 3d. Under c the hammer, 113 packages tobacco were disposed of. Leaf brought 8d to lOd, and flat work was t quitted at Is Id to 3s 2Jd, while faulty sold at Is 3d f to Iβ 9\d. The timber ealea comprise 339,000 ft L Baltic white timber, which sold at from 6s to lie 3d 8 for 6 x i to 6 x I£.
