Affiliation.—Peter Dunn was charged on warrant with neglecting to maintain his illegitimate child. Defendant denied the paternity, The complainant, sworn, stated that defendant was the father of the child. Defendant asked that the case might be remanded until Saturday for the production of witnesses, and the Bench granted the request. Larcency as a Bailee.—John Armfield was charged with having misappropriated a watch given into his charge. Chief-Detective Feast deposed to the arrest of the prisoner on Friday, 4th June, on the warrant produced. Told him the charge. He said he had got drunk and on the spree, and had pawned the watch at Nathan's, and that he (witness) would find the ticket among some papers of his in the Borough Hotel. Witness produced a pawn ticket, which he had found as directed by prisoner. H. E. Nathan, pawnbroker, Colombo street, recognised the pawn ticket produced as one of his, which had been issued by bis assistant out of his shop. Produced a watch corres ponding with the number on the ticket. The watch had been pawned at his place by E. Goodacre on the 28th of April last. Edward Goodacre, draper, remembered about the end of April last receiving a lever watch from prisoner to pledge. Took it to Mr Nathan's and got 30s or £1 10s 6d upon it. He handed over the money and ticket to the prisoner. F. J. Smith, jeweller, of the firm of Coates and Co, recognised the watch produced as having been in his shop recently for repair. It was given up to the prisoner to be taken to Cookson, at the Ashburton. Lucy Cookson, wife of Edward Cookson, living at Ashburton, remembered prisoner being at that place about the beginning of Apru last. Gave him her husband's watch to take to Messrs Coates and Co's, jewellers, and have it repaired, when he was to bring it back again. The watch produced was the same. Prisoner did not bring it back. He had no right to pledge it. Her husband gave £4 10s for the watch. Prisoner said he had got on the spree, and had then pawned the watch, and was very sorry for having done so. Since then he had been endeavouring to procure employment to redeem it, and to show he had no felonious intention he had written to Mr Cookson to procure a balance that was owing to him (prisoner) by the Ashburton Road Board, and place it to his (Cookson's) credit until he saw him. Sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. Illegally Pawning.—A charge of this kind was laid against the same prisoner under sec 34 of the Pawnbrokers' Act. Chief Detecthe Feast had found a second pawn ticket for a watch among prisoner's papers, which had also been pawned by Goodacre at Nathan's on the 26th ult. This watch had been given into the charge of the prisoner to have it repaired. After* similar evidence had been given as in the previous case, Detective Feast asked for a remand to allow of the prosecutor coming to town. Remanded j until the 18th inst. J
