ROAD BOARDS.
AKAROA AND WAINTJI.
A meeting of this Board was held at the Road Board office, Akaroa, on Saturday, the 16th inst. Mr G. H. Saxton was re-elected as chairman of the Board.
A letter was received from Mr H. H. Fenton, the district engineer, stating that he had examined and condemned the metal supplied and stacked at Red John's Gully by the contractor for works under Little River road, special grant, and recommending that no advance be paid until the metal is cleaned and stacked ; also advising the Board that the Government had authorised a further expenditure for benching and other work between the Old Pigeon Bay road and Barry's Pass.
It was resolved that specifications be prepared and tenders invited for tbe following works .-—Wideningand reforming portion of Pigeon Bay road ; quarrying, breaking, and spreading metal on the Little River road, Akaroa side of the range; clearing and benching continuation of Summit road to Long Bay track ; surface clearing and formation to the Barry's Pass road. The clerk was instructed to write to the Secretary for Public Works, stating the necessity for erecting new bridges of a permanent character on the Main road, Akaroa, to afford better accommodation to the increasing traffic. It was resolTed—" That Government be also applied to for payment of 75 per cent of amount Of contracts in hand under Summit road and Barry's Pass road grants." The chairman was requested to apply to the Government for an importation of immigrants into the district, as a great scarcity of labor exists. The sum of £196 Is Id was passed for payment on account of contracts and wages, and the meeting then adjourned.
Little River.—The annual school treat and distribution of prizes to the children attending the school took place in the schoolroom on Saturday last. A good tea was kindly furnished for the occasion by Mesdames Powrie and Tyson. After the children had thoroughly enjoyed the good things provided for them, tbe tables were cleared for the distribution of prizes and gifts from a Christmas tree laden with toys, &c. Mr R. Powrie, chairman of the school committee, presided. He said he had a very pleasant ; duty to perform to distribute the prizes. They were given as an inducement to the scholars to learn, and he hoped they would all strive and do their best during the present year. Mr Restell. the inspector, had given the school a good character, and he hoped they would endeavour to keep it up. The chairman then proceeded to deliver the prizes as under—viz, according to master's marks:—lst class—Alice Coop 1. Arthur Walters 2, Frances Tyson 3; 2nd classWilliam Powrie 1, Ernest Reynolds 2, Lawrence Reynolds 3 ; 3rd olass—lst division : Francis Walters 1, Georgina Westropp 2, Agnes Powrie 3; 3rd class—2nd division: Stephen Powrie 1, Margaret Thompson 2, amoel Burrell 3. According to inspector's examination:—lst class—Joseph Powrie 1, A. Leslie Allan 2, Alice Coop 3; 2nd class William Powrie 1, Ernest Reynolds 2, Lawrrence Reynolds 3; 3rd class—Francis Walters 1, Georgina Westropp 2, Agnes Powrie 3. Writing prize—girls, Frances Tyson; boys Joseph Powrie. Good condnct prize-—Annie Reynolds. General proficiency prize Catherine Munro. The toys, &c, from the Christmas tree were then given to the children, affording them considerable delight *S4 amusement, and after a very pleasant and enjoyable evening all retnmed to their homes.
