Atjcklasd, January 6. The agents of the A.S.N. Company hire have received definite infoimation that the present arrangement for the Californiau service will continue for six months louger. Mr George, manager of the Melbourne Argus, will probably accompany the Rev Mr Clark as a companion on his lecturing tour. At the Supreme Court, Henry Devoy, several times previously convicted, wag sentenced to four years' imprisonment for horse stealing; Thomas Morris, for forging an order, to two years ; George Moss, for illegally pawning, to nine months. The Southern mails are shipped aboard the Wellington.
The Macgregor will proceed to Sydney and complete her voyage. The outgoing mail will be taken by the City of Melbourne. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency's Circular of November 17th reports : Tallow, 33s 9d to 44s 61 per cwt for mutton; 36a to 423 6d for beef. Leather and hidfts firmer. Preserved meats in demand at improved rates. There is a speculative demaud for spring wheat. Cargoes afloat have been purchased at an improvement of 2s to 3s per quarter. New Zealand wheat 46s to 50s per 4961b. New Zealand hemp, in common with manilla, is exceedingly dull. Small sales at £16 10s to £21 for good clean. Any rise in value is out of the question. Gbahamstow>', Jan 6. The Mayor has called a public meeting to consider the best means of receiving the volunteer representatives. The Easby leaves for the South about noon. 1.50 p.m. The Otago has just arrived. New Plymouth, Januarys. The quarter's Customs returns show an increase of £556. Major Atkinson leaves for Wellington about the 11th. Hokitika. January 6. Arrived, steamer Maori from Dunedin, via Martin's Bay. Numerous applications have been made to the Provincial Government by persons desirous of taking up land under the special settlement regulations relating to Jackson's Bay. Several applicants proceed to the settlement by the steamer Waipara next week. There is considerable inquiry for land ia the southern portion of the province. Dunedin, January 6. In the Supreme Court Charles Fowler and .Fames McCormick each received two years for stealing from a dwelling; Thomas Samuel Carey nine months for stealing a watch, and James Fraser two years for forgery. Port Chalmers, January 6. Thomas Bassett has been arrested on suspicion of having murdered his mate, George Aldridge, during a drunken spree. Both are fishermen in the harbor. An inquest will be held to-day.
