ASHBURTON.

The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Koad Board was held on Tuesday, November 3rd. All the members present. The surveyor's report as follows was read : "Great South road, Wood Bros —I have given a certificate for £156 on this work. Burufctt street, Wood Bros—l have given a certificate for final completion on this work i Alford Forest road, Robt. Pullar—l have given a certificate for £40 on account of i work done. Black's road, William Gilmour —I have given a certificate for £100. Jackeon's road, section 2—l have given a certificate for £71. Cold stream Swamp road, Blackler and Greenaway—l have given a certificate on account for £40. V.D.L. timber, Julien Mendelson—When taking delivery of a portion of this timber I had to reject 1656 ft out of 8239 ft, as it was not in J accordance with contract. I have allowed a certificate for £60 on account of the timber taken. Ashburton township—l have prepared a careful valuation of the township, and have to inform the Board it exceeds that of last year by 550 per cent. I have prepared the drawings and specification for the bridge on the Great South road, now in coarse of construction, and for the guide posts, together with a diagram showing the writing required on each arm. I have also prepared a ii rawing and specification for thirty immigrants' cottages, with as much care to cheapness as possible, withont too much sacrifice durability. Graham's road—l have to i advise that a drain on the upper side of this road be made in accordance with the section and specifications prepared for that purpose, and for which tenders are laid before you to-day. Longbeach road re Gravel pits—The first pit on this road beyond Ede's requires 15 yards of fencing along the road frontage. The next six pits are not in a position to be of any danger to road traffic, Unless these pits have ling fences it is well to let the entrances remain open in order to leave a good ingress and egress for stock, otherwise animals being attracted by water in the pits might get into them, but in some cases would find considerable difficulty in extricating themselves. Pit No 8, at Mr Davies', is on DawsoD's road for 9 feet, and ought to be filled in for that distance, and then fenced along the frontage of the said road, being about 19 yards in length. Wakanui roads re Diversion—l had an interview with Mr Batherick on this subject, and beg to lay a letter from him before the Board. I have recommended that the Government be communicated with and asked for permission to utilise three acres of Reserve 957 in the township temporarily for a small paddock, to turn the Road Board horses into to prevent them straying. 1 have also to ask the Board to take into consideration the case of James Everett, who has been laid up through injuries received while in the service of the Board." Resolved—" That application be made to Government to be allowed to fence in three acres of reserve 957 in the township, to be used as a paddock for the Road Board purposes, until required for some other." Resolved—" That J. Everett be allowed one week's wages for loat time through injuries received in the service of the Board." Resolved—" That the chairman write to the overseer, urging him to pay more attention to his duties, and also to remain more with his gangs in future." Resolved—"That two earth closets be purchased lor the Board. Also, that Mr Turner be written to, asking for price of two dozen, delivered at the Ashburton Railway Station, as the Board are desirous of their being brought into general use in the town." Resolved—" That immediate steps be taken to enforce the clauses of the Public Health Act throughout the township with as little delay as possible." The clerk was ordered to write to Mr G. B. Way re cargo of timber from Auckland, also re delivery of drain pipes ordered. The application of residents on South Ashburton asking for continuation of Graham's road to be made passable was referred to the enrwpyoT to report on. An application ror tue erection oi a verandah in front of Messrs G. Oolman and Co's premises was granted. An application from residents in Burnett street west to allow ditch cut on road in front of their sections to remain open, till the street was formed was granted.

The application from Messrs Smart and others for a road to be made past section 15,363 was referred to the surveyor.

Mr Friedlander had an interview with the Board, asking for an extension of time to deliver his two timber contracts in. One month was gran tea.

Mr Jones had an interview with the Board asking for a road to be made to section 17,743 and 17,744. The Board decided to consider his application.

Messrs Blackler and Greenaway had an interview re their contract on Coldstream swamp road. Referred to the surveyor.

Resolved —" That from this date the Board will grant no personal interviews in any ordinary course of business, and that all matters muet be laid in writing." Mr McLaren applied for a road to be made passable between reserve 1420 and section JI9Q on the river near trig pole 48a. Referred to the surveyor.

Resolved — "That Robert Pullar be allowed 2£d pe*yard extra for metal on his contract, Alford forest road."

Tenders for building thirty-three immigrants' cottageswere opened, and one at £40 was accepted. Also for the supply of twenty guide posts, and one at £1 each was accepted. Also for 32 chains of a drain on Graham's road, and one at 8a per chain was accepted. Also for forming and metalling 11 chains of Dobaon'e street, aud one at £1 5s per chain for forming and la 6d per yard metalling was accepted. Also for forming and metalling a portion of Tancred street, and one at 169 per chain forming and Is 9d per yard shingling was accepted. Accounts amounting to £1599 5s 3d were passed for payment.
