Fat cattle, 27s 6d per lOOlbs ; steer calves, 30s to 38s; heifer calves, from 15s ; yearlings. 4"*s to 60s ; fat ship-borne cattle, 30s to 32s 4d ; Auckland fatted, 32s 6d to 37s 9d per lOOlbs. The Dorette immigrants have been released from .quarantine, and will be landed at Auckland to morrow. The Whaling Company have resolved to repair the vessel, appoint fresh officers, and send her to sea again. They made a call of 60s per share. At the inquest on the late fire, Mr King, chemist, deposed to accidentally knocking over a bottle of spirits of turpentine against another, breaking both ; the contents blazed up. The verdict was that the fire was accidental. Alexandra, April 24. Tawhiao still remains near here waiting letters from the Government. Napier, April 24. All licenses for Waipara were granted, except one which was postponed. WEl.lington, April 24. . The Customs returns for the colony for the March quarter give the gross receipts £297,810' as against £210,467 for the corresponding: quarter last y.ar. The greatest increase is in Dunedin, being £91.962 against £60,657. Auckland is £52.708 against £43,061. Lyttelton, £45,227 against £29,825. Wellington, 32,866 against £19,154. The duties on weight and measurement goods have fallen from £49,971 to £14.644 ;bnt the ad valorem duties have risen from £886 to £101,915. His Honor Mr Ja.9t.ce Chapman, His Honor Mr Bolleston, Superintendent of Canterbury, and Mr J. C. Crawford, Resident Magistrate of Wellingtor. have been elected tnen_*.r_-of the. Foaid of Governors of the New Zealand Institute. The University Council has concluded its annual session. Certificated teachers in schools established under the Provincial or General Acts will be admitted to fiual examination for the B.A. degree without passing matriculation, or keeping University terms. Teachers are to be reckoned certificated when they have been practising for five years.
