HEATHCOTE ROWING CLtJB. A special general meeting of the above club was held last evening at; the Wharf •Hotel.7 A 'A :■- ••:-•--' '■ - •/. On the motion of Mr Bamford,; seconded by Mr Clark, Mr Mardon took the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read, and confirmed. '■~ r;; _... Mr Davis reported. that some fortnight' back they had challenged .the C.R.C for a> four bared race, but had received no answer yet, except a verbal one from the captain of' the C.RAL, who had said they had only one man. They had also challenged the U.R.G.y but they bad not received any answer.. ."The; first business "before the' meeting wasitbe'. election of a delegate to represent the club at the U.C.8.C., in J_e room of Mr Verdon resigned. - t -• 7 ■■ Prior to this being done, the hon sec (Mr J. W. Davis), reported, the decision of the U.C.B.C. as to the former meeting of that club objected to by the Heathcote club, that theCentralclnbconsidered their meeting perfectly legal. A meeting had been called by the hon sec of the late regatta on the Heathcote, in accordance with the resolution of the club a committee had been appointed, and the funds handed over to them. As, how-; ever, the interprovincial.race was coming off, and it was thought the events would clash, the committee had met and decided that the regatta should be postponed. On the motion of Mr Clark, Mr J. W. Davis was unanimously elected as a representative . of the Heathcote Rowing Club at the Central Club, in the room of Mr Verdon resigned. Mr M. Davis said that, in conjunction with Mr Pavitt and Mr Clark, he had been taking steps to r form a crew for the interprovincial; He thought that it would not be right that the Heathcote Olub should not be represented, as they had been at all regattas. [Hear, hear.] He had been in negotiations with Mr A. Reese and Mr J. Dawson to come in and join them in forming a crew, but these gentlemen were endeavoring to form a crew of their own, and they had not given a decided answer yet. If they, did not row, the club crew were willing to go into practice, at phce, and he thought he was not saying too much when he said that they would bring .the club colors to the fore. In answer to a question from Mr Clark, Mr Davis said that Messrs Reese and Dawson would be put on their roll of and the boat entered as an Heathcote boat. It was; however, thought that the Central Club would not object to any boat as the race was advertised fpr all comers. If they elected those gentlemen as .members there would, however, be no question about the matter. ■, The Chairman asked Mr Davis if he could enlighten the meeting as to the conduct of business by the Central, Club ? Mr Davis said he hardly knew, but it seemed that the Kaiapoi men carried the sway. He objected altogether to Kaiapoi having, so many representatives ; they could, carry anything at the olub. They had more ; members than the metropolis, which he thoughtwas not right. Mr Clark said that if Messrs Reese and Dawson would not join with them Mr Pavitt had said he would go in, and they could form acrewconßißting of Messrs Loughnan, Pavitt, Clark, and Davis; who would do their best carry the club boat forward. • , , I • • Mr Verdon then moved—" That the. H.R.C. be represented at the interprovincial race, and that it bea recommendation, to: the club that Messrs Pavitt, Loughnan, Davis, and Clark be chosen to go into training, to represent the club, subject tojany necessary alterations which may be deemed requisite by the commodore." ;.;■■■ Mr W. L. Taylor seconded the motion. Mr Davis pointed out that it would be necessary tft.have theboat fitted with Bteering apparatus, as the race would be rowed withont coxswains. It WPnld cost about £ I 10s or £2. He would, therefore, move— "That the Heathcote be fitted with patent steering apparatus." Mr Verdon seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Mr Davis brought under the notice of the meeting the necessity of having the races for the cups now neld by the club rowed off. They had the Mayor's cup for four-bared race, the Commodore's enp for four-oared race, and Messrs Coates and Co.'s cup for scullers' race. The latter had been won by Mr Verdon. He thought it wns just as well that these cups shonld be rowed off. , - The meeting endorsed Mr Davis? views, and it was resolved to take steps to get the cupa rowed pip. .It -jyas decided to epter the chub's boats for the bumping races on Saturday next. Mr Davis said that the liabilities of the club were about £40, but the most pressing wants was a pleasure-boat and pair-oared boat, Now, he thought that the best course would be to borrow £100, with which to p*y their liabilities and procure these boats. The acquisition of a pleasure boat would bring a number of new members, and they would have property to the amount of £200 to offer as security for th e money required. The want of a pair-oar boat had debarred the club from taking part in the§e contests. Mr Verdon quite agreed with Mr Davis. The ladies of the Heathcote had been most assiduous in their efforts for the club, and yet they had no pleaspre boat to give them a trip in return for their kindness ! After some discussion, Mr Ctyrk rqoved—" That tyessrs Bamford, Mardon, Pavitt, and Davis, be a committee to take steps to raise the sum of £100 for three years on the security of the club property, to be expended- in paying liabilities and purchasing a pleasure boat and a pairoared racing boat." Mr Davis seconded the motion, which was agreed to. After the transaction of some further business the meeting adjourned.
