CHRISTCHURCH EDUCATIONAL DISTRICT WEST.
TO THE KDITOB OF THE PItESS. Sir,—Through your kindness I wish to call the attention of the resident householders in the above district to the fact that as yet no steps have been taken to call a meeting to decide on who shall be nominated ac candidates for the school committee to be elected on the 7th of August. If in the East Chriatchurch district meetings are necessary they ought to be equally so in the West. The West is making no stir, the East is all alive. It may be thought too much labor for one individual to go to several meetings in the district to explain the Education Ordinance, the necessary steps to be taken in electing the committee, their duties, &c, &c. I am sure if a respectful petition is drawn up, signed numerously, aud presented to Mr VV. 11. W. Williams, he, I am confident, will have much pleasure in addressing any number of meetings on this subject, or any other which might come uppermost in his mind at the time. Mr Williams's intention was frustrated to a certain extent at the meeting at St. John's echoolroom, for only oue meeting was decided to be held iustead of three proposed by him, the other two he bo asked to hold in Christenurch West, and thus be the means of keeping him well before the public. I hope the district will remember that if only nine candidates are proposed, tliov will be elected on the evening of the meeting. The committee must be residents in the district. If more than nine are nominated, a poll must be demanded by six householders living in the district. Yours, &c, Pate v. July 26, 1873. [We agree with our correspondent that the householders of Christchurch West outjlit to take immediate steps to secure the election of a fit and proper school committee ; but we do not see why he need go out of his way to attack a gentleman who is doing the very thing he recommends by getting up meetings of householders to consider the subject.—Ed.
